I was surprised to hear that Steve Yzerman is moving to an advisory role in the Tampa organisation. Julien BriseBois will be appointed to the GM chair.
Not that Molson is showing any indication that he wants to construct a progressive, first rate front office, but this hurts nevertheless.

Crap. Brisebois was by far the best candidate to replace Bergevin. Mind...a fire hydrant could probably do a better job. At least the fire hydrant would run things in an impersonal manner.

I think Brisebois was one of our pipe dreams - like Lecavalier a long time ago and like Tavares most recently. After watching the Habs descent under Bergevin my guess is that Brisebois would have turned Molson down in a heartbeat. Why would he want to go anywhere near this mess.
He's paid his dues in a first class organization that has now rewarded him with the top job. He's managing a terrific roster with a real chance at the Cup. It will be years before MTL reaches the level of Tampa Bay.

I wonder if this was a bit pre-emptive. They saw the dumpster fire in MTL and probably knew that Brisebois would be the first call for Geoff Molson if Bergevin gets axed. They didn't want to take a chance on Brisebois getting scooped, so Yzerman is stepping aside. It's actually the best move for TB. As successful as he's been, Yzerman is well-suited to the same role as guys like Cam Neely and Brendan Shanahan. More overseeing and less day to day management.

Yzerman did a fairly good job in Tampa, but he still never won anything. IMO he's leaving a failure.

Ultimately, yes, it will be a failure if that core does win a Stanley Cup.
However, I think that Yzerman deserves credit for building a strong organisation that is widely respected. Nine playoff rounds won in eight seasons is pretty solid. As a comparison point, Bergevin's tenure has yielded three rounds won in six soon to be seven seasons.

Full credit to the job that Yzerman has done in Tampa. Tampa has done a top notch job drafting and developing young talent to integrate into their lineup, and signing their key pieces to reasonable contracts. The one caveat is that you could argue that he's benefited from the best tax situation in the NHL. The Habs would have to spend much higher than the cap to provide the same after tax compensation to their players.

Full marks to the Tampa development/build...but they're also reaping the benefits of tanking and selecting two generational players.
2008: Stamkos #1 2009: Hedman #2
Tampa's build is something Edmonton has yet to accomplish, despite the myriad of top picks going their way.

Yzerman wasn't that great of a GM, compare him to Mb,
Yzerman division finishes over the last 6 years: 4,2,2,2,5,1
Bergevin divisions finishes over the last 6 years: 1,3,1,6,1,6
So if Yzerman was so good, MB must be GM of the decade candidate!! The 2 years the Habs finished 6th were the years they battled injuries all year.

It depends what holds more value, basically. For me division titles are not particularly meaningful unless a division winner walks the walk in the playoffs.
I would evaluate that nine playoffs series won in eight seasons are more important than three in six seasons.
Stamkos missed the majority of two seasons. Lundqvist missed three months one season and the Rangers made the playoffs anyway. Injuries hit all teams.

There's also a trip to the Finals that doesn't seem to be mentioned here with a loss to a great Hawks team.
If Bergevin walked away now with the Habs in the same shape as the Bolts I think most people here would not consider that failure.

Even with our deepest lineup, Price was still called upon to steal a ton of points. As soon as he's gotten hurt....
