all of a sudden MB's Max move doesn't seem so bad. 6 pieces of not very much, and a maybe who knows what will happen.

so tired of the Karlsson talk on Ottawa radio... Glad it's almost over.. don't know about that, it might continue, a la PK talk. two 'cornerstones of the franchise", gone. and now in a real dog-fight for bottom feeding; Vancouver enters the mix now because EK is out west.

The Senators have traded their captain Erik Karlsson to the Sharks alongside Francis Perron. Ottawa will reportedly receive Chris Tierney, Dylan DeMelo, Josh Norris, Rudolfs Balcers, 2019 or 2020 first-round pick, a 2019 second-round pick and two conditional picks in return. - TSN splash page.

That is a pretty brutal trade. San Jose neither gave the Sens a young quality roster player (no Hertl, no Meier) nor a top tier prospect. Instead, Wilson gave them a third line centre (Tierney) who is an active player with no finish, a below average NHL d-man (DeMelo), and couple of prospects that for most clubs in the league are basically second tier (#6-10 in a normal org) types, a 2nd that will probably be in the #55-60 overall range, and a first in 2020 likely to be in the #22-32 range. Yeah, I know there is a conditional pick (a second rounder) if Karlsson re-signs which could be a first if the Sharks make the Finals in 2019, but this haul still feels like a bunch of mediocre assets plus two or three decent but not amazing draft picks.

The bag of pucks might be better. One wonders if Melnyk isn’t doing this deliberately to tick off Sens fans.
And what does Wilson have on Dorion and Melnyk?

Melnyk just has to breathe to tick off Senators fans these days.
We love Karlsson and we'll do whatever we need to keep him. Oops.
We need a new arena and we'll build one as soon as we win the bidding competition. Oops.
We'll never move this team. Unless those rotten fans don't pony up the dough. Oops.
He makes Molson look positively brilliant.

Brutal deal for the Sens. Karlsson will be a UFA and will command a massive contract. You never get equal value back in a trade like that. I'm sure this was an auction process and the Sens took the best deal. The market sets the price. I'm sure this was a good as the Sens could do under the circumstances.

I suspect part of Dorion's mandate was to trade Karlsson as far away from Ottawa as he could. That would have limited his options. You know it won't go well for Melnick next time the Sharks play in Ottawa.

If you can't get more for Erik Karlsson than you could for Max Pacioretty, there's something wrong. Josh NOrris is looking like a 3rd line centre at the very best, Dylan Dimelo was actually a UFA for about 10 days just recently because San Jose didn't qualify him, so Ottawa could have had him for nothing, the first round pick is going to be late, in the 3rd line, 3rd pairing range, Tierney is no more valuable than Tatar and the seconds are seconds. Basically, Montreal got Suzuki, a better prospect than Norris, for a much less valuable player.
It's a disaster of a trade, regardless of how one looks at it. It's going to be worse when Karlsson finds out San Jose is a nice place to play in and signs an extension. Maybe. Housing is very expensive there.

You know it won't go well for Melnick next time the Sharks play in Ottawa. That clause where Ottawa gets a pick if San Jose trades him to an Eastern Conference team is laughable. Ottawa was so sensitive over Wilson flipping Hoffman to Florida that they actually asked to ensure it doesn't happen again and in doing so, weakened their return. How utterly stupid. They should have sent Hoffman to Florida directly and not worried about playing him a couple of times more per year. It's hard not to laugh at that franchise. I feel so sorry for the Ottawa fans, who are served slightly less honourably than Montreal fans. Both teams seem to be focused on cutting costs at the expense of the fans.

It's going to be worse when Karlsson finds out San Jose is a nice place to play in and signs an extension. Maybe. Housing is very expensive there. They'll have the space for the cap hit, but is there room on the defense for him and Burns? That's two rovers that don't really play their own end terribly well. They're both rhd, so they won't be pared together at ES. Pickles and Dillon will be spending a lot of time covering up and hanging back. If they can sign him, they will get Karlsson for more of his prime on this deal than they did with the current big deal Burns is on. Burns is 33 and in the second year of his 8x8 deal. He'll be 40 when it expires.

According to Button, Ottawa doesn't even have a first round pick...on a year that they might get Jack Hughes.
Yikes.
