McJesus would likely rather have Caligula as a team mate than Manning.

The Oilers have some injuries on the blueline so I guess I can see where a rental like Petrovic can help stabilize things a little. I am not sure if Florida is tipping its hand about giving up on the season, but their d-corps is not very good and if they are dumping Petrovic (no way they would re-sign him anyway given their very high payroll relative to their revenue stream) it kind of feels like they are getting a jump on trade deadline business.
I do not quite understand what Edmonton is thinking with Caggiula for Manning. Manning is totally a fringe NHL d-man and his contract is an issue, plus when you factor in how bad the Oilers depth on the wing is then it really seems hard to figure. Caggiula is not great by any stretch but at least he seems like a guy who has a place in today's NHL.
Considering how desperate the Oilers are for skilled NHL wingers and how absolutely desperate Chiarelli and ownership are to make the playoffs this season, Bergevin should try to sell high on one of the overabundance of Habs wingers.

The history with Manning breaking McD’s collarbone in his rookie season, the fact that he is at best a fringe defender, and finally that Caggiula was a popular guy make that second move really puzzling. Chia is in desperation mode. Don’t see how this saves the season or his job. Of course, the Oil still employ MacT and Lowe after their combined bumbling....yikes.

This is Chiarelli we're talking about. He's made a number of bad trades that have been discussed here, with Hall for Larsson being the worst. He also has the dubious distinction of being the GM that traded the top two picks in the 2010 draft (& not getting much for either player.)
He makes Bergevin look competent by comparison.

Manning was considered untradeable by many NHL GM's because of the points above. Fortunately for Bowman, there's always a Chiarelli somewhere. Like I've said before the bar for being an NHL GM is not high. I think Chiarelli knows he's done. He'll never get another GM job anywhere. This is all about desperation and saving his job . It won't help and will probably speed up the process. What a huge mistake the Oilers made with him. Their defense might not be as 'solid' without Larsson, but imagine what their secondary scoring would be like if they still had Eberle and Hall and didn't have Lucic. Thank god he was there because otherwise, Montreal might have Lucic.
