20. F Ryan White 6-0 200 WHL Calgary 72-20-33-53
Scouts Take: " His offensive production was modest this season, but if you look closer Ryan White actually lead the Calgary Hitmen in scoring this year. White is a meat and potato's player, he does all the little things right but he lacks the fancy hands to be a go to offensive player. Plays a buzz saw game, finishes every check he can and puts some oomph into his hits. Seems to be the first player in on the forecheck at all times. Excels on the cycle and is strong down low. Stable base with remarkable balance, very stocky player who makes up for his lack of height with a thick frame. Protects the puck well and is strong along the boards and in front of the oppositions net. Has a non stop motor and works hard consistently shift after shift, competes hard in traffic. Works diligently defensively and back checked hard in every game of I saw, could be an asset to the penalty kill. His best offensive asset is his shot. Has a snipers release that he can get off his stick immediately. Catches goaltenders off guard with taking little time to unload a heavy shot. Can pick up a rebound and have it to the net in a hurry. Even on his one timers his shot is always hard and he has good accuracy. Is smart about getting to open ice to let go a shot. Has a soft touch with quick hands in front and will score a lot of goals off of secondary chances. Can pick a corner in tight. Adequate play maker, is patient with the puck and doesn't mind protecting the puck while waiting for a line mate to get open. Makes quick decisions with the puck and moves it maturely. Not the biggest, nor fastest, nor the most skilled Ryan uses determination and hockey sense to be a very effective player. He scores goals that are goals at any level and that trait will translate well to the NHL. His ability to take a loose puck and get it to the net so quickly and accurately reminds me a tad of Jonathan Cheechoo. Not saying he's the next Cheech, but I like his game and he will just be a very usefull player on any line. Reminds me a little bit of March Recchi."
21. F Ben Maxwell 6-1 180 WHL Kootenay 69-28-32-60
Scouts Take: “ Ben Maxwell was seen as a potential top 10 pick before the season started as he was very impressive as a 16 year old in the Dub and at the last years U-17. Maxwell had a slow start to the season but saved the best for last with a spirited and productive stretch during the playoffs and was Canada’s best forward at the U-18's in April. Maxwell has that natural feel for the game that many of the great players today possess. Has an almost methodical approach to the game and seems to be one step ahead of the competition with his mental game. Always in the right position, the puck just seems to find him as do scoring chances. Uses that hockey sense to emerge as a gifted play making center. Has superb vision, can slow the game down at times and waits for an open man to appear. Is creative with the puck and is willing to try hard plays, but is mature enough to settle the play down at times. Very poised with the puck and looks almost lazy with the puck, but he handles it effortlessly and he can be elusive to get it from, because as soon as the defenseman decides to close in on him he seems to pass it at the last second. Has such good hands that he’ll over handle it at times looking for the perfect shot, has smooth moves with the puck. Because of his poise with the puck, hockey sense, soft hands, and exceptional play making he will be a natural fit on the power play some day. Skating is a bit hit and miss, for someone his size he shouldn’t have an issue with his foot speed and first few steps, however he does. Likely that’s because he’s so lanky and needs to bulk up, that would make him more explosive, his stride is fine and his a smooth with a solid top end, average at getting to the outside. Has a great release on his shot, really snaps it off his stick, his shot is also fairly accurate, it’s more of a quick than powerful shot, and he’s still more of a play maker than scorer. Shows good two way upside, was strong defensively in the games that I’ve seen, he came down low to help the defenseman, used his poise with the puck to make the first pass to aide the breakout, and provides a nice outlet for his teammates to pass to. Maxwell has been knocked for his lackadaisical play, and has been called out for his perimeter game, not really a fan of traffic. He is effective enough though, and with some added strength maybe he would show more willingness to get his nose dirty. I like him enough as he is though to take him in the first round. He really saved his stock in my opinion with a gutsy playoff performance for the Kootenay Ice than a strong U-18's”
28. D David Fischer 6-3 185 USHS Apple Valley 25-8-30-38
Scouts Take: "The best Minnesota High School defenseman available in the draft and was named the states Mr. Hockey, the same award that Brian Lee (9th overall in 2005) won. I saw him play a few times for Apple Valley High School in Minnesota and I saw him up close at a Mid-Western evaluation camp at the Shattuck Prep School campus. His poise with the puck is amazing and you simply cannot coach that. He never panics in the face of pressure and can by himself time with his long reach and soft touch before finding an open player to make the pass to. Keeps his head up, digests the play while seeing the ice easily and distributes the puck exceptionally well. Seems to be elusive with the puck as no one could catch him and no one could stop him from making a pass. Not a flashy skater with great speed, but he's quick enough and he's agile in close so he never appears sluggish and I never saw him struggle wi th speed off the rush while playing defensively. He is smart positionally and handles most situations well. Uses his long reach mostly but he shows mean streak and can get down right nasty, some times taking uncharacteristically bad penalties or loosing position looking for the big hit. Is active in front of his own net and plays with an edge in front his crease. Could add bulk as he struggles to move bigger opponets from the front of the net and he will need to be stronger at the next level. I would like him to be more assertive offensively has he has immense offensive gifts but seems more contempt to just distribute to the puck to his line mates and allow them to make the play. However, showed he can take his game to another level by really coming hard late in the game trying to make a difference. Great vision of the ice and moves the puck very well and has a mean streak, along with his frame make him a sought after prospect in this draft and should go in the bottom half of the first round but could rise because of his upside."
