Big Bird took out Schultz and the Flyers were no more...

Ripped the reputation right out of them. It also helped having Bouchard, Lambert, Risebrough, Tremblay, and Chartraw in the line-up. Guys who could play any game. Not to mention Guy Lapointe who could throw them with anyone.

Not to mention Guy Lapointe who could throw them with anyone. A lot of Edmonton fans feel their 80's Oilers iced the best team of all time, but I really believe the Habs of the late 70s were ... both teams had immense talent but I thought MTL was a bit tougher as a team ... the Oilers had tough guys, but in addition to your list, add Larry Robinson and Gilles Lupien ... don't have to tell you what kind of wrecking machine Big Bird was, and even Bob Gainey could look after himself and I think this is what differentiated the two teams ... remember seeing the Flyers back in 1974 ... Montreal 2 Philly 1 and what I remember the most about that game was big Pete Mahovlich wrestling Dave Schultz down on to the centre ice logo ... Mahovlich had mounted Schultz and had him by the collar ... I don't know what was said but I could see Mahovlich chirping at Schultz from where I was in the nose bleeds ... I checked the box score on that game and it shows Schultz didn't take any penalties in the game, which was odd because the two of them had their gloves off ... probably a different rule back then, not sure ... Cheers.

Both great teams. One measure is goal differential. The year Gretzky got 212 points the Oilers had a +103 differential. The 76-77 Habs had a +216 goal differential. I could go down the lineups but that stat alone says it all IMO.
For context, the Lightning have an +80 goal differential with 3/4 of the season played. I chuckle when I see comparisons of the Lightning to the Habs dynasty. Get back to me after they've won 4 cups in a row.
A 216 goal differential. That's utterly ridiculous.

Wow, that goal differential is insane. It is tricky to compare dynasties even less than a decade apart, but for me the dominant Habs d-corps would have given Montreal the upper hand against Edmonton.
Gudas is suspended for the game tomorrow. -- Obviously in 2019 the Flyers have been playing good hockey and even though time running short for their miracle aspiration of playoffs, it is clear that they have not yet checked out. Therefore, Montreal needs to play with focus and urgency.

Comparable to the impressive goal differential is the record 8 losses over an entire season (76-77) which was sandwiched between 11 losses (75-76) and 10 losses (77-78) - all Habs Cup winners, not surprisingly. No other team has come close to those numbers save for one season when the Red Wings in 95-96 only lost 13 games BUT hardly a great team as they choked in the playoffs. As for those supposed "best team ever" Oilers in the 80s they lost 18, 20, 24, and 25 their Cup years. NO CONTEST BY ANY MEASURE!!! I remember listening to the games on the radio for those 70s teams and if the opponent did not have 3 goal lead going into the 3rd the Habs were likely to come back.

Don't mean to be a legend buster....but....I just conducted some research on the Robinson-Schultz fight, and it definitely didn't have the immediate results the retelling would have us believe.
"The Fight" occurred on Sunday, February 17, 1974. It was an afternoon game...and I remember watching it...although not every detail, of course. In the second period, John Van Boxmeer decided (unwisely) to stand up to Schultz. JVB to the ice...out cold. At end of that period, Bouchard went after Clarke in our corner....and the melee started.
Robinson may have quelled the Flyers' nonsense for head-to-head matches....but Philly would definitely continue to bully the rest of the league en route to two consecutive Cups.
I don't know about the fighting stats, but here are the scores from Feb. 17, 1974 to the Habs sweeping them in the Finals of 1976.
10 regular season games. 2-5-3. 7/20 points. Not what you'd call domination.
1974 Feb. 17. 2-2. Mar.3. 6-0 loss. ---------------- Oct. 20. 2-2. Nov. 2. 3-0 loss.
1975 Jan. 11. 6-0 win. Mar. 23. 2-1 loss. ---------------- Oct. 18. 2-2. Nov. 16. 3-1 loss.
1976 Jan. 24. 5-3 win. Feb. 15. 2-1 loss. ------------------- 1976 Finals Habs sweep. Flyers were without Parent. Habs were the better team, but Wayne Stephenson was no "Bernie".

At the draft that year, the Habs chose Cam Connor, Rich Chartraw, Risebrough, Tremblay and Gord McTavish, all guys (especially Connor and Chartraw) who were aggressive to an extreme. Connor didn't make the team, but that infusion of the next 3 guys probably knocked the cockiness of the Flyers for a loop. They knew Schultz was nullified and suddenly there was a cohort of guys who could and would inflict serious pain. I doubt it changed the way the Flyers played vs the Habs, but it surely gave Montreal more time and space than they ever had before and that's all she wrote. The talent difference was never in question.

I remember reading this in Larry Robinson's "For the Defence" ... it was Montreal's first playoff game in Philadelphia since Kate Smith started belting out "God Bless America" at Flyer home games ... the Habs knew the Flyers were pretty hard to beat when Smith did her thing, so fast forward to Game 3 in the Spectrum ... Robinson writes that we knew it wasn't an anthem so when Smith started singing, a few of the Habs players started skating small circles on the blue line ... by the end of "GBA" the starting five skaters were circling between the blue line and behind the net ... it wasn't an anthem, so why did they have to stand there and get psyched-out (like other teams did) by the show ... anyway, the Habs won the game 3-2 then went on to beat the Flyers 5-3 to win the Cup and put an emphasis to the myth of Kate Smith ... Cheers.

In that era, the Leafs had the playoff misfortune of facing those bullies 3 straight years. Toronto lost every series...but they gave it everything they had. I recall the last two being all-out wars. Always impressed with that Sittler, McDonald, Salming crew. 1974-75. Round 2. Philly sweep. 1975-76. Round 2. Philly 4-3. 1976-77. Round 2. Philly 4-2. At the draft that year, the Habs chose Cam Connor, Rich Chartraw, Risebrough,, 1979, Round 2. That exact line on the ice in OT, Game 3. Connor with the unlikely (flukey) winner. Some say it was the beginning of the end of whatever mystique Palmateer possessed. The next game featured the infamous high-sticking penalty to Tiger Williams on Robinson in OT....with Big Bird sending us to Round 3 vs. the Bruins. Start at 9:40 of the clip. Bad decision by Turnbull in thinking he could "go for it", and Dan Maloney didn't cover for him. Down 0-2 in the series in OT. A game of mistakes as much as it is skill, it seems.

Flipped over to the Leafs-Caps game....Caps up 2-0.
They showed footage of some Washington players visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame, with Ovie placing a replica of their Cup ring into a showcase.
Also a picture of Ovie holding one of Rocket Richard's sticks....perhaps on his way to his 8th Richard Trophy.

The Habs look great tonight.
The Flyers dream probably ends here. They will be six points behind the Blue Jackets and Columbus has two games in hand.
If Columbus sells hard at the deadline I think the only team that could catch them might be Carolina.

Sadly, I haven't watched a game for 2 weeks.
There use to be someone who would put the game on YouTube. If you have a link, PM me.
