7 years/$50 million.
Man, I don't know. Hayes is still young (27) and he has never had any major injuries and he plays an in-demand position. But his career, offensively at least, is not all that impressive -- .601 points per game and .241 goal per game.
This might be bad news for Nolan Patrick because the Flyers must see him as a second line right wing or a third line centre.

... one wonders if this means that Nolan Patrick is being converted to a winger full time. You don't pay Hayes $7 million to be your third line center. They have Couturier as well. There were some grumblings that Patrick might be available ...

Ridiculous contract. Duchene's camp are licking their collective chops. As is Brendan Gallagher's. Anybody still think we're going to get him for $6 million a year? If he turns in another couple of seasons of 30+ goals (which would make four straight seasons of such) he'll be looking at eight, maybe even nine million a year. For that matter, Phil Danault must have a huge grin on his face this morning as well.

7 mil for 7 years is crazy for Hayes.....with a term of 7 years I would think 5.5 a year would be high for him. WOW......players in the league should find out who is agent is and hire him.

That's possibly the worst NHL contract I've ever seen. Was there another team even remotely close to that bid?
The play here is the cap is going to go up when the NBC contract comes up for renewal. The current deal expires after the 2020-21 season and pays the league $200 million per year, about $6.5 million per team. That's less than 10% of the salary cap.
The US media companies have been throwing big money around for sports. The most recent NBA contract went up by over 300% and pays out $2.4 billion per year, or close to $80 million per team!
The NHL isn't in the same class and it's still a niche sport in terms of national TV viewers, but I can see the next US contract being 3x larger than the current one, if not more. That could add close to $15 million to the salary cap, taking it from around $80 million a year to $95-100 million a year.
But I don't think even that assumption justifies paying Kevin Hayes over $7m in cap hit. Not unless the Flyers think there is way more upside there.

He's never had a 50 point season, and only one with 20 or more goals. I don't how big your are, or how well you can skate. He's not remotely good enough defensively to make up for his offensive shortcomings. In the current landscape, he should be a $4-4.5 million player imo. Maybe $5 million.
These are the kind of contracts that put teams in cap hell.

Two points to make regarding this deal.
A) I read somewhere that Philly's ownership was completely ticked off at not making the playoffs and have given Fletcher a mandate to do so. Niskanen, trading for Hayes' rights prior to July 1 and then this contract, all point to that fact. The deal is silly, but we know this is silly season. UFA's almost always (except lately in baseball) get overpaid, usually by 20-25%, so Hayes' numbers are right in that overpayment ballpark.
B) This seems like a great opportunity to me. If Fletcher is in WIN NOW mode big time, it's the perfect time to take advantage of him. MOntreal has some solid seasoned vets. GAllagher, Byron, Shaw, Petry, Weber. All guys who have the best character and would fit in well with a WIN NOW team. Except for Gallagher all are likely not going to be big contributors when the kids mature in 3 years.
Philly has Nolan Patrick, Gostisbehere, Sanheim, Lindblom, Farabee, FRost, and Ratcliffe. Surely a deal can be found there.
PS. Ron Hextall must be pulling his hair out. Like Ron Francis, he does all the heavy lifting bu the owner loses patience and someone else comes in and has all the assets they need to turn the team into a temporary winner.

I agree with your assessment about Philadelphia. I think the Hayes contract is bad but if one simply sets aside longer term cap issues that it could create for the Flyers and just focuses on whether Fletcher is strengthening the team (i.e. the additions are significantly better hockey players than the subtractions), then I see a compelling case for the Flyers being a top 6-8 team in the East.
Assuming Bergevin strikes out on high end additions to the roster, the Habs really need to hope that teams like Columbus, the Islanders, and Carolina see their goalie play regress and miss the playoffs. Because I fear the Flyers are taking a big step forward and Florida if they get Panarin and Bobrovsky probably will too.

This guy I'd too tall, that guy is too short, thr other guy has big ears......and Hayes got paid too much.
Are some of you really concerned about Mol$ons money? Because it looks like we are going to do nothing of consequences yet one more time....

Translated from French by Microsoft #Habs: Bergevin will look at the free-agent market to improve his team. But he'll be careful. There are already big contracts (Skinner, Hayes) that make you think.
Cheers.

Cheers. The Skinner contract is justifiable. Jeff is one of the best 5-on-5 goal scorers in the league. A polished turd is still a turd. The Flyers just decided to pay one $7 million a season.

That is a crazy contract. This will price Duchene way out of Berg’s comfort level.

That is a crazy contract. This will price Duchene way out of Berg’s comfort level. Pierre LeBrun estimates Matt Duchene will get between $9.5/$10 mil with term ... if he's in the ballpark with that figure, I don't see Duchene in Montreal ... Cheers.
