TSN is reporting that Gonchar is scratched tonight but explains that it may be a mutual decision. Apparently he is logging a lot of minutes and is getting worn down by the trade speculation. The article goes on to explain his contract status - something that I didn't really understand. www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=74038

That's pretty straight forward.
Gonchar is a restricted free agent at the end of this year. So theoretically he could be signed for a 10% increase. But Gonchar wouldn't accept this and would more than likely elect to go to arbitration. He will win his arbitration because he has been in the tops of the league in defensemen scoring for the past couple of yeras so he is likely to be rewarded with a one year 5 million or 6 million contract.
But there might not be a next year, with the looming CBA and all. So at the end of next year he would be unrestricted and could go where ever he wanted.
So any team trying to sign Gonchar is going to want a 3-4 year deal signed now. If not they are playing Russian roulette .... and if Gonchar won't sign a long deal because he will miss his chance at free-agency then some teams will pass on him.

I long for the days when trades were made based on the player's ability - not his contract. Sounds like it is possible that a player swap can be done but an official trade could fall through because a team can't come to terms with Gonchar and Mark Gandler. PS - Quinn has traded 2 of Gandler's clients in the past - Karpotsev and Yuskevich. If he was GM the leafs may not even be talking to Washington.

Who is running the leafs - Ferguson or the webmaster at mapleleafs.com? If they have added Gonchar then who did they take off the site?

George McPhee is reported to be asking for Stajan/Antropov, plus Colaiacovo/Steen, plus a first round draft choice. Would you do it if you were Ferguson?
It might give les feuilles mortes a shot at the Cup, but if they don't make it, can you imagine what the fans will be saying in Ontario?

In TROO (the rest of Ontario) we'll be saying "Ha-Ha!". It might help them to a second round, but not to a Cup without someone solid between the pipes.

If this is true - from the Caps point if view I would want Stajan & Carlo C. They are the most read y to contribute. I am just not impressed with Antropov. There are just so many rumors floating around: - the Boston Globe says the Bruins are offering Samsonov and a first pick - Pierre Maguire says the Avs are proposing a deal involving JM Liles. - The Toronto Star says the Devils are involved but don't want to give up Parise. We all know that when you look back at most of the trades that happened this season you will notice something - there were no rumors or speculation that these deals were about to happen. So, I take all these statements with a grain of salt. This guy is good but I don't know if he automatically propels a team to the final. I'm sure McPhee is enjoying watching the value of Gonchar rise - ths is what happens in a bidding war. McPhee was turning the screws again very recently, In today's Spectors report ( www.spectorshockey.net ; I didn't include the link because of the size of his article) McPhee tells the Washington paper that with Jagr, Lang & Bondra gone he has shaved $18million off his payroll and now is where he wants to be - at $35million. There is no rush to make a deal. Someone will get desparate and overpay.

Thought I heard something to that effect in December. If I were Washington I would want Antropov and Stajan. Carlo C is not as good as he is made up to be. Just like RDS praises some french players in Montreal .... the Toronto media have been praising this "hometown hero" ever since he was drafted. They make him out to be Bobby Orr ...... have they even seen him play. He is a good hockey player, but he is far from being a top 2 guy in the NHL.

Not sure what Leonsis said but the recent statements were from McPhee to a Washington paper. It's probably just the Caps turing turning the heat up on the auction participants by sayiing something like - I really don't have to trade Gonchar now but if you are interested make me an offer.

- the Boston Globe says the Bruins are offering Samsonov and a first pick - Pierre Maguire says the Avs are proposing a deal involving JM Liles. If Maguire is right, it's interesting to see the kind of fluff the Avalanche are down to offering, after scraping their cupboard bare the last few years to pick up that 'missing link'. You can see the same pattern with St. Louis, Detroit, Toronto. You get that guy you hope will be the baking soda that makes the pancakes rise, but you strip your farm system. Those teams above all have that in common, a much weakened farm system. Too bad they have more money than brains too.

I went to fanhome today( have not beeen there for almost a year ) to see the reactions of fans of other teams. Bruins fans are like leaf fans - they think it's sewn up. Avs fans don't like it. Thy are high on Liles and don't feel they need Gonchar. I don't know the Avs system well. They have Liles and Skrastins in the lineup on a regular basis and have Keith Ballard in the system. Maybe Lacroix thinks he has enough depth. Or maybe this is just another stupid rumor like the rest of them that don't pan out.

Brian Rafalski broke his leg last night & Stevens is still out with concussion problems. Lamoriello has to find a quality defensemen now.
I wonder if he will up the ante for Gonchar.
Since I posted this I have read on TSN that the seriousness of Rafalski's injury may be exagerrated. Going back to Jersey for further examanation

The names change every day & it really makes me wonder about the validity of the information. This is the first time I have heard Berg's name mentioned for anything.

I just looked up Liles. NHL.com lists him at 5' 10", 185 pounds. He's 26 years old. Not stats that have me drooling. More like a filler who's stuck in there and played adequately. At 26, it's not like he's about to improve by leaps and bounds. At least in my unprofessional, only having seen him play once and not noticing him, opinion.
