Edler is not going to the market. He signed for 2 years/$12 million. He did not get the third year he wanted but he has full trade protection for the duration.

That's a lot of scratch for a 33 year old guy that has a hard time staying healthy. He likely settles for $5-5.5 million if he gets the third year.

Edler certainly could have helped the Habs for a couple of seasons. But him and his agent probably knew no one was giving him a third year with trade protection given the expansion draft down the road. Edler has been in Vancouver for a decade and continuity is a meaningful factor when you have kids in school, etc.
Bergevin said today he is looking for a d-man through free agency but that he does not want to make a financial commitment that would hurt the organization's ability to keep its quality young players. Gardiner is going to cost a fortune (I would be shocked if he leaves money on the table to stay in Toronto), somewhere in the 6 x 7 or 7 x 6.5 neighborhood. Even if Bergevin wanted to bid in that range, the point is probably moot because Gardiner probably wants a lower pressure gig back in the States. I suppose Bergevin will touch base with Chiarot. I don't know. While this guy has some tools for me he does not really play like anything better than a good 5-6 d-man. That would make not want to pay him 4 x 3.5.
