Carolina's intentions are generally pretty transparent. Cutting salary is (always) the order of business. My hunch is that Waddell convinced Dundon that Faulk is worth keeping and they can shed De Haan and roll with some combination of Forsling, Bean, and Fleury behind Slavin on the left.
It must be that getting Saarela attracted Chicago to pull the trigger on this deal because they have Keith and Maata on the left and Jokiharju looked plenty good enough to deal with a full season of sheltered assignments on the third pair, so really De Haan seems like surplus requirements and he is not going to be healthy until November.
Maybe Bergevin and his pro scouts are not huge fans of De Haan or maybe Montreal was hesitant to part with a kid as solid as Saarela. As much time as Bergevin is on the phone (and Waddell is a good bud), I cannot imagine he did not know more or less what it would take to grab De Haan.

It seems so many of Carolina’s moves revolve around saving money. Front load a $50MM five year offer sheet to Aho and watch Dundon squirm.
