Two losses to start the season. Not exactly what the doctor ordered. Bouchard said that a bunch of the guys who were sent down have not showed up yet (a shot that they need to accept their demotion and play better). Why on earth are the older washed up players in laval? They can be poison in attitude and work ethic. Remind me again why Weise is with us? Why did BBinz trade for him?

It looks like McCarron cleared, so Bouchard gets a big body to give the Rocket another dimension. Big guys last chance for a AHL career. Next stop, Freezalot Russia.

Ok, I'm probably out in left field here, but the first ticklings of concern are coming to me about Bouchard. He seems to do a ton of things right and better by far than Lefebvre, but his record still sucks. I can forgive last year because he had no talent on the team. And its pretty early yet to make any judgments on this year's team, but it sure would have been nice to come away with one win last weekend. He's got some pretty good players in his lineup now.
It may be taking time for all these new guys to come together and get used to each other, so no where near panicking, but the next month will bear close scrutiny. If he isn't between .550 and .600 by the end of November, I'll be worried.

It was only one weekend but the comments from the Athletic were how Evans, Belzile and Hudon were the players who showed up. That doesn't make me feel overly good about our depth. Poehling was a minus 4 with 1 shot...ugh. Again, I know it's early but I look at that roster and I guess I don't see this grand turnaround that we are led to believe is happening.

Last night Brook scored his first AHL goal and Leskinen added two apples.

I think he felt he had earned a spot (duh) and yet down he goes. He wasn't going to beat out any veterans because that's the Montreal way, so it was him vs Suzuki. I suspect the positioning played a role too. Just wonder what kind of conversation was had with him. I haven't seen him play any AHL games, but the -4 doesn't scream out that he's playing well.

The Rocket are back on the ice today. Only the fourth game of the season, but it does scream a bit of a must win to finally show that this improved lineup can convert games into points.
Chicago’s farm team is no pushover either. The Icehogs have first rounders Kirby Dach, Adam Boqvist, Nicolas Beaudin in the lineup, and NCAA star Dylan Sikura who I really liked while watching him play at Northeastern with Primeau. NHL vet Kris Versteeg with his two cup rings is their captain.

Big 3-1 win for the Rocket on the road. Primeau with his first pro win. Poehling with two assists, his first AHL points. Leskinen also adding a pair of apples. Goals by Belzile, Vejdemo and Hudon.

Poehling with the big face off win, Leskinen with the beauty pass, and Hudon with the nice one timer. Nice goal.

Why on earth are the older washed up players in laval? They can be poison in attitude and work ethic. Remind me again why Weise is with us? Why did BBinz trade for him? He traded David Schlemko ($2.1 million) and Bryron Froese for Dale Weise ($2.35 million) and Christian Folin. He wasn't getting rid of Schlemko if he didn't take Weise back, because of the salaries. The fact that we got an NHL player in Folin for Froese was just pure bonus. By all accounts Weise has been a great character leader down in Laval, and we all know he's the biggest Montreal cheerleader around. If you have to have an overpaid veteran in the AHL a guy with a positive attitude is at least a step up from somebody who might be sitting around moping about their lot in life.

At the end of training camp I thought that Leskinen was close. I definitely thought he was better than Reilly, and frankly speaking, nothing I've seen from Reilly so far has changed my mind on that. Bergevin got Leskinen for two years, which was smart, so there is at least time to figure things out, but you have to think that if Leskinen continues to excel in the AHL he won't be too happy making $70,000 a year. He can't bolt on that contract (hence the two-years-being-smart comment), but you'd like to get him some NHL time, if he's worthy.

Saw Otto Leskinen in the Rookie Showcase in Belleville and he played like a 4-yr pro amongst rookies ... sending him to Laval, if only to become more acquainted with the NA game, was a good move ... I'm hoping he gets a crack at the show sometime this year ... Cheers.

Leskinen has played quite a bit of meaningful hockey against men as a young 22 year old. He has 3.5 seasons in Liiga in Finland, including his 31 points in 57 games last season. He now has four assists in his last two Laval games, his first AHL points this season.
He plays a mobile game and has really good vision and IQ. The "new age" defender. I really look forward to see if he can keep this going, because if he can then he is the LHD in the system most likely to be ready for some NHL duty first.

Looks like big Michael McCarron is ready to go and will see his first game since December 2018 this Wednesday. He is also wearing the "A", which he did last year as well for his half season.

Also on the injury front, Juulsen has been practicing with the team now. According the Bouchard, the plan is to get him into game action by the weekend. That is great news if it plays out that way.

The Rocket are back in action tonight hosting the Baby Bruins (boo, hiss). Big Mac makes his season debut. Time for Varone and Barber to step it up and start producing and playing like AHL all stars again. The game is on RDS for those who may have access.

This tells you everything you need to know about he game. Blown 4-0 lead. OT solved nothing. Evans wins it in the shootout. Last two Providence goals were with their goalie pulled, including the tying goal with 18 seconds left. Yikes. Two points tho.

I watched the first period, don't have interest enough to watch much AHL hockey. But is McCarron a center? He started the game centering a line with Weise and another player. Stood up for himself well in that fight though. Also, first time hear tell of Bruins prospect Steen, think he has a shot at NHL? Looked like NHL hands, could be a shot in the dark if we get him as throw-in in a trade.

Oh yeah, having Weise in top farm team kills an organization. Does it 100 times out of a 100. Weise has a good attitude and a hard worker. They use seasoned veterans to get prospect use to pro hockey. Aids in their development. We never gave up nothing for Weise. His contract is non-factor. Habs generally well under cap as Montreal poor choice for the top level free agents. Some of these posters been around Canadiens all their lives and have no idea what is going on. Using hard working veterans has been long used by organization to aid skilled youngsters. Common practice really. Larry Robinson said in his book he wouldn't have been the player he was if not for Noel Price went he first went to Voyageurs.

Safe to say that Grant is pretty high on Leskinen. There is no doubt that he can help transition the puck and generate offense from the back end, but his ticket to the NHL will be on his ability to defend. So far so good, as Bouchard has him as Laval's top pairing LHD right now.

As for trades, a Habs-Bruins trade would be quite a rarity!! The last trade involved Traverse (yikes), but the Dryden one will live in infamy for the Bs.

Last two Providence goals were with their goalie pulled, including the tying goal with 18 seconds left. Yikes. Two points tho. I watched the third period, and yikes indeed. I don't know what it is, but sometimes you just know, you know? You'd think that with a 4-1 lead in the third you'd feel pretty confident, but I just didn't feel that way. And it's not like Providence was dominating or anything, it's just Laval didn't have that "swagger", that "this game is over and you know it" kind of approach. They were kind of sloppy, no real intensity, and of course the 6-5 was just terribly played. Like the Big Club they couldn't get it out of their zone if their life depended on it. I only watched the third, but nobody stood out to me. Maybe Leskinen a little bit, but only because I think I've found my comparable for him. I've seen him like three times now, and he reminds me of a smaller Jeff Petry. Good but not elite skater, good shot, very good offensive vision, solid defensively, and a sneaky big hitter. Sneaky in the sense that you're not looking for it, and all of sudden he hits you, hard. I like him.

So far so good, as Bouchard has him as Laval's top pairing LHD right now. Course, Grant being high on someone is no guarantee of anything. Leskinen had some decent numbers in the Liiga last year, with 31 points in 57 games. That's good for a defenseman. He's also 22, so it's not like his learning curve has flattened out. His team, Kalpa, finished out of the playoffs last year but seem to contend most years. They lost in the finals a couple of years ago, so at least he's not playing in a losing environment. Besides, he's Finnish.

Rematch against Providence tonight (let's not blow a lead this time) and then a match against Hershey tomorrow. Juulsen will not be playing, but it is due to needing more practice time according to Bouchard.
Primeau is back in net tonight. Alain also gets back in and Pezzetta sits. Peca still out with injury.

Hershey over Laval tonight, 4-2. Peohling with one of the goals. One thing of note. When Primeau plays, the Rocket win. When Lindrgren plays they lose. Often enough, anyway. theahl.com/stats/game-center/1019694
