Well, the Jake Gardiner saga is over. He signs with the Canes for 4 years/$16.2 million.

That is a shockingly low contract for a guy that some thought was going to get a 7x7 deal. Even his no-trade clause is pretty weak - 10 teams only.
This tells me that either his back is completely shot and teams know it, or he REALLY wanted to go some place where nobody knows his name.

Man, this is bizarre on a number of levels. First, the numbers confirm that the market was not hot for 29 year old d-man with a lot of offensive talent and who put up 52 points just two years ago. I mean, he got a worse contract than frickin' Calvin de Haan. Four years at only four million per and apparently nothing in signing bonuses. Second, this likely confirms that either Bergevin did not value Gardiner too highly or Gardiner wanted nothing to do with Montreal.
I get it that Carolina wants to build on last season's success, but they are a puzzling organization. Their gate revenue is only in the $23-24 million dollar range and they are spending a tonne of real money on the roster this fiscal year. Maybe Dundon feels disrespected by his peers and wants to prove he can both win and spend.

Yup. We can sign the Nick Cousins and Ben-Hurs of the world but not the higher tier free agents. Habs better hold on to Timmins, Churla and Co. because that’s where all the hope rests.

The Leafs probably could have squeezed him in with that deal.
I'm really surprised at the low numbers in dollars & term.

It's pretty sad we can't sell Montreal to any serious free agent. That was a perfect deal cap wise for Montreal....even if we went 4.5 a year it would still be good. Cranky must be fuming.

I GIVE UP I have better things to do then figure out why BBinz is sticking his hand up a cow's butt....and keeps selling us that he's really trying hard to find those nuggets of gold. via Imgflip Meme Generator

Really low term and low AAV from what all the TO centric experts were spouting leading up to and following UFA season. Weird. Are the wonky back issues or his soft defensive play keeping him away from the bigger payoff? I can see Berg being a bit hesitant with four years after signing Chiarot to 3 and all those other fringe guys such that we only have 2 free NHL contracts left. He does have a pipeline of LHD now, but it will take a few years at least.
Does the early contract to Nate Thompson (and others) still make sense now to anyone not named Berg or Claude? Off to camp with 48 contracts, money unspent, a similar lineup, good young prospects, but too many one way deals to bubble/fringe guys to really expect Claude to cut the kids some slack early.

If he signed Gardner, there would be nothing left over for Mol$on big fat bank account. It's bad enough that he fell behind those 8 million achievements. Besides, BBinz said that he will show anybody who asks that magic cow nugget that says.....anything can happen if we made the playoffs.

He does have a pipeline of LHD now, but it will take a few years at least. At BEST, we are two years away from Romanov getting to top 4. AT BEST. With a strong chance that he may not even be top 6 material. Meanwhile we are literally wiping out years of our two best player.....fading away. What is Price thinking right now? It's not as if he didn't voice that he wants to win. via Imgflip Meme Generator

Good, now we can move on from Jake Gardiner ... now all I have to listen to is the Mitch Marner soap opera that won't go away until he's signed ... TSN/SN will milk it to the end ...
Cheers.

I wanted him in MOntreal as Weber could cover up his defensive shortcomings. Make him look better, get a couple of good years out of Gardiner and trade him for a big return when prospects are ready. But know his personality was not a good fit in a fish bowl type atmosphere like Montreal.

A lot of teams passed on Gardiner. Seems Carolina's taking the biggest gamble here.

Id have taken a gamble on him. A Weber/Gardiner pairing would work well IMO. To make up the tax differences we'd have had to pay Gardiner 4 x $5MM, but that's manageable. He certainly signed for much less than I expected both for $$ and term. He must really want to play for Tom Dundon.

Don't worry, BBinz is going after Chabot. Fer sure. Absolutelleeyyy. He swore on his favorite jockstrap the he would do that.

Yeah, it is probably only about $500,000 to make up the tax differential. North Carolina has a state income tax in excess of places such as Ohio and Pennsylvania. Gardiner did not land in a tax haven.
I would imagine that once he realized that no 6 x 6 (let alone 7 x 7) offers were coming, Gardiner probably focused on American clubs and finding one that is relatively competitive. Within those basic filter parameters, Carolina must have put the most money on the table.
Nevertheless, it still seems like a poor UFA payday if this guy is actually healthy.

I wonder what Gardiner thinks when he sees another offensive d-man same age as him get a 7 year, $7.575 AAV extension that begins in 2020-21.
For that matter, I wonder what Don Sweeney thinks given that Krug is in the exact same situation with a contract expiring after this season. There is no way the market value of Krug is inferior to Spurgeon; in fact, I would imagine Krug could easily get seven years/$56 million if he becomes a UFA. I guess Sweeney will have to hope and pray that Krug elects to leave money on the table as other Bruins have.
