Good deal money wise for the Jets, but absolutely critical as they had to gut their D corps in the offseason to make cap room for their three key RFAs. That defense without Morrissey would have been a gong show.

Morrissey is good young d-man, locking him up seems necessary. I suppose that there is always the chance that he does not quite find that next level but even in that event the prime years for a #3 at only $6.25 per is not bad business.

He’d be the top defenseman on many NHL teams.

I hear you, man. Morrissey is a good one, for sure.
I think that he could grow into an indisputable first pair production beast, though for me he has just not arrived there yet. Not to make this thread about a dynamic ex-Habs d-man, but Subban entering his age 24 season had already delivered more than Morrissey entering his age 24 season now.
PK Subban: regular season, 202 games, 32 goals, 82 assists; playoffs, 26 games, 5 goals, 11 assists Morrissey: regular season, 223 games, 19 goals, 58 assists; playoffs, 22 games, 1 goal, 2 assists
Of course, talented guys develop at their own pace and in particular d-men in the NHL are very rarely supernovas in their age 21, 22, and 23 seasons. Winnipeg is fortunate to have Morrissey on this deal because with his quality it is highly likely that he lives up to the value of the contract. However, if he had already produced as an elite level d-man, I believe that he would have insisted on a Werenski type deal.

I think it's also a clear message to those unsigned Jets. Hurry up while there's cap space left.
