Took an 8 year 64 mill deal...
No offer sheet can come from MB now... I guess playing in Ottawa is preferable to playing in montreal, even when you grew up a Habs fan (which I think chabot was)

Good proactive move by Ottawa and Dorion/Melnyk seemingly managed to get it done with no signing bonuses. Chabot must be a kid that wants some security in his NHL career.
For a young offensive top pair d-man, I have to believe this contract will age nicely. Who knows if Chabot will play the entire contract in Ottawa. Interestingly, the first half of the deal pays $26 million in real money whereas the back half pays out $38 million.

I think what ottawa is betting on is revenues go up and increased ticket sales because they have some good prospects coming up and by year 4 they should have a stable playoff team.

I don't think his contract has anything to do with playing for Montreal, so let's not make it about that. It's not about dissing Montreal. It's about being happy where he is. The story is him bucking the trend of current/pending RFA players. He's taking a potentially huge discount to sign a max term deal.

And that contract is going to look like gold for Ottawa in a few years. The gambling thing is going to raise revenues substantially. Chabot could be a top 5 defenseman in the league with improved play in the defensive zone. I don't know if he's bad there, it's just that he's so good offensively. If he's even average at the back end he'll be great. If he's better than average there, he's a Norris winner. Heck, give how writers value defensive play (Burns) Chabot could win a Norris anyway.
Oh well, there goes the offer sheet strategy for Chabot. Seems NHL teams are cluing in to lock up those RFA's early. I'm going to be ticked for the next 5 years on that Aho offer sheet. Grrrr.

STUPID
He basically gave up 10.5 for 5. Then 12-15 for max term in a richer market. Not exactly a smart or prudent financial move.
Chabot 8 million will be 5 million halfway through that contract.
He could of played it smarter and waited for another 4 months. Then if he's playing like he did last year, he's good for another 2 million a year times 8.
This was a dumb move by Chabot.

The kid just banked $64 million dollars to play hockey and live in a city he likes. That is more money then he will ever need and Ottawa is a pretty clean nice city to raise a family. Good for him.

I'm with you on this one, man. For all the complaining that players are overpaid spoiled brats, I'm surprised at how many people are so quick to call him stupid for signing a deal that allows him to concentrate on just playing the game. It's friggin 8... million... dollars. PER YEAR! Yes, he definitely could have gotten more. And I don't like the fact that Melnyk gets to save some money in the long term. But when you consider the general level of greed amongst these millionaires (players, owners and agents alike), this signing is a breath of fresh air.

I understand his reasoning. What if he suffers a career ending injury next season during the last year of his present contract? Then he's left with nothing. He's got security & a ton of money.
