Another favorable deal. He takes a massive pay cut. Deals like this further reinforce the concept I've had for a long time that the cap needs to move from a gross salary to a net income basis. Players can't use higher tax markets to bid up other teams, and players make the same end money regardless of where they play. It doesn't remove the advantages of warm weather and obscurity, but it truly levels the economic playing field.

That will inform his qualifying offer.

What's the last year of the deal worth?

What's the last year of the deal worth? $9 million, thus whatever his next deal is will have to be at least that per year.

I was thinking that the RFA's were going to get deals like Marners, but in retrospect they are all getting bridged between 5 and 7. So maybe that's why Laine is taking forever to sign. My fearless prediction is Tkachuk is next in Calgary.

Tampa is no doubt breathing a sigh of relief. That cap hit is not hard to deal with at all.
Dubas created, by default or design, an internal salary structure that is unlike the rest of the league and is only marginally impacting the rest of the league.

I can't imagine that Dubas planned to have half of his cap space taken up by four forwards. He's going to have a hell of a time next off season when half of his D (Muzzin, Barrie, Ceci) are UFAs. And the season after next, his goalie is UFA.

It will have been worth it if they win the Cup this year and from what I've been reading (here and elsewhere) the Leafs had better win it all this year for the very reasons you pointed out ... still, they're going to be tough to beat on any night ... Cheers.

Cheers. The point has been brought up in the media. For such a young core, they have a very narrow window with which to win it with the whole group. They have ONE NHL defender signed for next season. Sandin and Liljegren likely make the club between this year and next, but they're both very young. I still think they are hoping that Nylander has a good enough year to justify his hit and they look to move him for an equivalent defender.

Seems odd that some team hasn't offered one of these RFA's a 5 year deal at good money. It's allowing their existing teams to bridge them all and in most cases, we're saying it's a team friendly contract. Either the player really doesn't want to leave their current situation, or GM's aren't submitting offer sheets. In Marner's case, he wanted to stay in TO. but at least he's earning big bucks. Point, I don't get. Yeah, it's Florida so the taxes help big time, but 3 years still doesn't get him to UFA status and he gave away a lot of negotiating rights when he said he wouldn't accept an offer sheet from Montreal. Brisebois knew then that he didn't want to move. Point is one of the big offensive drivers in the league and his cap hit is $6.75MM? Doesn't make any sense at all when compared to guys in his peer group. The brainwashing in Tampa is perfected.
Sigh. If only the CAP was in after tax dollars.

Marner's camp admitted that they received at least two. It's thought that one of them was from Columbus.
