IMO, Gainey selected Price because he knew Toronto was trying to trade up to get him. It was a matter of which is worse "Losing Price to Toronto, or losing a home-grown boy". But, IMO, Kopitar was ranked lower on Gainey's board than the players I have listed. If he didn't select Price ... he was going to select Brule or Bourdon. So they are the ones that got away. Come on, that's just absurd. You're saying that Gainey ignored Timmins' list and picked Price just because he thought Toronto might want him? Gainey and Timmins are professionals. After eight months of scouting in all corners of the hockey playing world, and after much debate and discussion, the scouting team finally arrives at a list of players. They strike players off the list as they are chosen, and select the highest rated guy on their list. The only thing we know about their list is that Price was their highest rated guy after the first four picks. We don't know where Brule, Bourdon, or Kopitar were on their list, and any suggestion is pure speculation.

The only thing we know about their list is that Price was their highest rated guy after the first four picks. We don't know where Brule, Bourdon, or Kopitar were on their list, and any suggestion is pure speculation. It not like we dont speculate here ... Prior to the draft of TSN, Bob McKenzie specifically stated that Toronto had conversations with Chicago trying to move up in the draft. McKenzie also said that Toronto wanted a goalie. (They eventually ended up picking Rask). So if McKenzie knew it and made it public record on National TV, I am sure Gainey knew it as well. Are you telling me you honestly believe Gainey had a goalie as the BPA? We sure lacked goalie depth back then, huh? (Theo, Danis, Halak, Leino-Heinberg (?) ). They do not necessarily pick the "next highest ranked player on thier list" as you say. Sometimes, there is a need and the GM fills that need with a player even though there is a BPA still on the board. (as in Toronto ..they wanted/needed a goalie and they chose one, even though their first choice was gone). Even though it is speculation, I still think it is possible that Gainey chose Price because he knew their would be no chance to get him or Rask in the second round, and he thought it would be easier to trade up and get Latendresse then it would be to trade up and get a goalie. (and don't tell me other GM's don't discuss/speculate/or know who you want when these trades are made draft day.) And yes, I also believe the fact it was Toronto that expressed interest in trading up for a goalie might have made Gainey think that selecting Price was the way to go and then concentrate on Lats, instead of Brule.

The HABS do have a tendency to try and hit a home run with surprise picks in the first round. The picking of Kostsysin, Price and Fisher, tend to prove that. Even the picking of Chipchura raised many eyebrows. While I never understood the choice of Kosts (and still don't), Price, at least, carries a franchise goalie tag but it will take many years for that particular pick to be justified.
