I concur, Cranky.
Ferris is Hall's agent. He is not signing an extension now. This goes to July 1 and while Hall probably cannot command Panarin type dollars he will likely get offers in the 10.25-10.75 million range per.
If Bergevin trades Primeau, an elite prospect and by logic the Habs goalie of the future, for a rental the fans should tar and feather him.

Tonights game against Detroit is a perfect example why they need someone like Hall. Lots of quality chances and couldn't finish. Also on the PP who would rather see Hall or Weal? The division is wide open ths year and after missing the playoffs last year they need to do well this season. Price and Weber are playing well and the team has some good parts with prospects and picks. They should be able to put together a good package

Hall would help, for sure. Hockey is debatable and for me he does not transform the Habs into a contender.
Molson and Bergevin do not believe in definable windows so it would be tough to justify giving up something like Primeau, a first round pick and Brook for a rental.

They should be able to put together a good package I agree that Hall is the kind of guy who could make a difference. Because of Price and Weber, anyone in the GM's chair is going to be pressured to go for it now and it's still very questionable that even with a guy like Hall that this team is good enough to win it all. Hall is 28 and in order to keep him will require a $9-11MM contract. I'm reluctant to do that, especially since he tends to get injured. I also doubt Montreal is a desired destination spot for him. KK and Suzuki (along with Caufield) are guys who are going to solve the offense when needed problem. Do you give up one of them for a rental? I wouldn't so the question of trading for Hall becomes entirely one of cost. If we're giving up a 2021 first and guys like Brook or Struble, say, then I'd say it's worth it. Otherwise, no.

Looks like the Yotes have landed him. Picks and prospects. Friedman, Dreger, and Campbell from THN reporting.

Arizona is really trying to make some noise, after so many years of uncertainty, inadequate facilities, and dire attendance. They also owe the league a tonne of money.
I think that Devils did well. No, Shero did not get Hayton or Soderstrom. But Merkley, Bahl, and Schnarr are consistently ranked in the #4-8 range among Arizona's prospects and the Coyotes are thought to have pretty good prospect pool depth.

That's a pretty good haul for Hall. HF is split about 50/50 on whether it's quality or quantity. The first in 2020 is top 3 protected. If somehow the Coyotes finish third or higher in the lottery, they retain their pick. There are conditions on the pick in 2021 that could make it a first, but iirc their long shots. Bahl has top 4 potential, but he's a stay-at-home defender. Merkley has offensive skill, and is a former first round pick. Some doubt his ability to get to the NHL, but he's second on the Knights in scoring as a 19 year old. In the end, I think a first, a pick, and some defensive prospects is a good return for what's likely to be a rental. And, Phoenix did it without having to give up their best prospects.

I believe you are thinking of Ryan Merkley, kind of a problem child, who is now in London. Nick Merkley is a former 1st rounder of Arizona from 2015 who is now in the AHL.

I'm with you, blny. Except in the most exceptional cases, there is always some degree of risk that even a highly regarded prospect may just not quite stay on the development trajectory needed to make it.
Time will say, but I think the Devils made out better than for example Ottawa did in the Stone trade. Dorion got one of Vegas' top two prospects (Brannstrom), but the rest of the haul was basically junk (a second round pick likely in the #45-50 range and a bottom six scrub that went back home to Sweden). There was no conditional pick based on Stone re-signing. Basically the entire return for Ottawa is predicated on Brannstrom being an elite prospect who will develop into a top pair d-man. Brannstrom is 20 years old and has struggled in the NHL thus far. Of course, that does not mean that he will not yet develop into a top pair guy but he does not look like Makar. Again, my point is that while I generally agree that quality trumps quantity there is always a risk in getting too few good assets in return for your star because if the one gold nugget turns out to be silver or semi-precious then things are uncomfortable.

Really couldn't care less. I'm glad we didn't give up anything to get him. Pure rental as there is not a chance in hell he chooses Montreal as a UFA. It'll be somewhere cherry stateside.. warm, less tax, lower cost of living.
Stay the course even if chances are it leads nowhere
