Wow. Detroit did really well. Picked up the guy off waivers and gets a good player in a trade.

I dont get it, why trade away Fabri for de la rose unless the St. Louis pro scouts see something or Fabbri did something unacceptable... Bizarre

I dont get it, why trade away Fabri for de la rose unless the St. Louis pro scouts see something or Fabbri did something unacceptable... Bizarre Robby Fabbri has had some devasting injuries to his left knee. Torn ACL and then re-injured the same knee less than a year later. Don't get me wrong, he has some serious offensive chops. But if you're an undersized, one-dimensional offensive talent with a bum knee and you're not producing... you're expendable.

Yeah, Fabbri's value has declined due to those knee injuries and the lack of productivity since he came back.
The other part of the story is that De la Rose proved that he is an NHL player, albeit a role player.
The Red Wings basically cannot score goals so maybe Yzerman is okay with taking a flyer on Fabbri. I can see that. However, if I had to bet on who is likelier to still be playing in the league 24 months from now I would say De la Rose.

Because of Fabbri's injuries, my first impression is that the Blues got a decent role player for a guy who wasn't going to reach his potential. I'd give the nod to St. Louis, except that Yzerman isn't a idiot. This will be an interesting deal to follow. I don't mind that teams are making trades this early in the season. Adds some spice.

Fabbris got a pair of PP goals thus far in his first game in Detroit. Seems like a coup for Yzerman.. a solid goal scorer for free
The real loser is the holder of that original 2nd round draft pick who wound up with nothing due to roster management... Our boy Bergie

I hear you, man. I thought projecting De la Rose into a fourth line centre role in the NHL was not some kind of wild fantasy. The problem was that Bergevin signed Peca, who had proven nothing in the NHL, to 2 years/$2.6 million, and then opened his mouth over the summer that Peca was definitely roster worthy; next Bergevin signed Chaput which put another guy in front of De la Rose.
Losing a player like De la Rose is not an organizational catastrophe or anything like that. And there is no question that Bergevin over the years pulls off some nice depth moves. But he does have a tendency to, intentional or not, hand his coaches each September a lot of veteran options for the bottom six and at times kids Montreal drafted get squeezed.
