Schneider turns 34 this season and he looks done. No one would take him if the Devils ate half. I guess they buy him out in the summer.

This is a great example of why it can take a long time to judge a trade. At the time it happened, Lou Lamoriello was get a sore shoulder from all the claps on the back for stealing Schneider for a 9th overall pick (Bo Horvat), and it could easily look that way, especially after a few years of Schneider being the backbone of the Devils. As Marc Bergevin keeps telling us, centre is a difficult position to master and Horvat didn't join the Canucks until his Draft year + 2. But he gradually improved and now he's the captain of the team and a highly regarded 2nd line centre. If you asked anyone today, you've got a 24 year old very good centre on one hand and a goalie waived out of the league on the other.
Naturally, this is an extreme example and really, it was an even trade. NJ got a player they needed and the Canucks got a player they needed. Schneider's demise is due in part to injuries he hasn't been able to overcome, not a natural dilution of ability, so it's not as one sided as it appears today.
Moral of the story is that things can look very one sided early and very one sided late, the other way. And sometimes it's just luck. We shouldn't claim victory or defeat too early.
