Things are piling up against Peters

Times have changed dramatically. Maybe Peters did not realize it and just assumed man management in the insular micro ecosystem of hockey is a world apart. Or maybe he knew but did not care. Either way he will be fired because crossing the line repeatedly -- laying one's hands on a subordinate, making racial slurs, making off colour jokes -- in the contemporary workplace is clear grounds for dismissal.

I was trying to understand the resigning part. I suspect Peters and Calgary came to some pay out agreement. If Calgary fires him they have to pay the full contract, but if Peters is found to have breached some morals clause in the contract, then he gets nothing. Since all parties would prefer less risk to more risk, my guess is they agreed he'd get something, but not the full amount of his contract.

I agree, seventeen. This is likely what happened. In this scenario, both sides make an unpleasant public spectacle go away and at the same time avoid a worst case scenario (for Calgary this would entail paying his full contract and for Peters this would be walking away with no compensation).

They also avoided a potential legal battle... depending on the wording of his contract.
