Well......I'm at a loss.
Third straight home game we allowed a short handed goal. That's unacceptable. It's grossly unacceptable. I'm still angry.
First period the Dogs came out flat and just played poorly. Chased the puck everywhere and ended up down two nothing after being outshot 14-7. I changed my between period snack ritual and got the hot candied cashews after the first. Someone had to do something as the Dog's weren't doing anything.
It worked. Dogs came out strong and got a goal. Then gave up another. Actually turned the tables on the shot count and ended the second period at 21 shots apiece.
Alas, there was no snack remedy for this team tonight as they got within one, grabbed a two man advantage and put Corey Locke on the point who coughed it up three times and caused a two on one for the 4th Peoria goal.
To answer Bad Company's question from the Dogs vs. Marlies post....no the Dogs do not feed the point on the power play for the big shot. They do, however, feed the point for more passing. It's what they do. All passes all the time until someone coughs it up. The power play has zero direction which is proven by the 4 shorthanded goals allowed in the last three home games.
Kostitsyn was not in the line-up.
Good: Maxim Lapierre and Jonathon Ferland. As always. Played their game solidly. This Lapierre kid is a keeper. He's our best prospect. Hands down. Got his fourth goal tonight on a sweet wrist shot off an excellent feed from Grabovski. It's not a surprise that Lapierre has earned Bulldogs player of the game in all four home games this year. I'm pretty sure they will change it to the Max award. The guy is all heart and has amazing defensive vision and is slowly starting to show his offensive talent. Mikhail Grabovski got in the line-up and played well. The kid is so fast, but he's tiny and got thrown on his ass at least 3 times. He does, however, back check and gets into the scrums to support his teammates. He even threw a really nice hit against the boards. I have to say that the few times Grabovski and Lapierre were on the ice together they showed some nice chemistry. I'd like to see these guys together more often. Mikhail played well. Also having good games were Matt D'Agnostini and Michael Lambert. I was very impressed with Lambert tonight. He played with Max and I've noticed that players play at a higher level when they are on Maxim's line. I may take away his nickname of 'Minus'.
Average: Milroy and Chipchurra. These two took a step back tonight. Played a little sloppy in the offensive end. I'm not worried though. Halak played okay. He wasn't really tested. He made some nice saves and once again the defence fell apart and left it up to the goaltender to make some brilliant saves. Unfortunately, you can't get them all.
Bad: Wow. O'Byrne took a major step back tonight. He was terrible. Just terrible. Bad passes, bad choices, passed the puck to areas of the ice, where not only were there no Dogs, but no players in general. The defence on this team is awful. Benoit, Jancevski, O'Byrne, and Traverse do not a top four make. Patrick Traverse is a bad hockey player. You really have no idea until you watch him for a few games, but he's really bad. Careless and sloppy. He makes me angry. Corey Locke makes me want to eat a bullet. His play on the point for the two man advantage was laughable. Gave it away three times and then the fourth time caused the put away goal. It was disgusting. He may have some offensive talent, but his hockey sense is in the negatives.
Don Lever needs to go. Right now. Like...right now! This team is going nowhere fast and he's killing our kids. Coaching is so important to these guys at this point in their careers. Case in point....there is a very young NHL team that is 8-0. Buffalo. Their farm team in Rochester with even younger kids? Is 6-0. That is not good news for us Habs fans. Lever needs to go and Andy Murray needs to come and help.
I'm hoping that a return of Francis Lemeiux, J.P Cote and Andy Archer may help the defensive aspect of this team. I pray James Sanford finds his way back into pro hockey and gets another chance as he was our best power play quarter back and best offensive defensman last year. Played half the games as Benoit did and led the defence in scoring. We need that so bad right now. I hope those four can help turn things around.
If Lever does go...hopefully he takes Reverse and Locke with him.
Marlies again next Wednesday.
