Surprised by this. I know it's been almost 5 years & the Devils are struggling but they've got some promising pieces. I guess some teams have higher standards than others. PS: in the comments are some Chicago fans hoping Bowman is next. I guess 3 Cups isn't enough.

Guys with silverware to their name getting fired. Guys with silverware on the hot seat. That is how it used to be in Montreal.
Geoff Molson has built a kinder, gentler organization. Wow, what an accomplishment...

Definitely caught some people off guard. He was allowed to make the coaching change and trade Hall. Seems to be a significant rift in ideology.

Wow, what an accomplishment... The longer Bergevin has a job, the longer the team struggles and the more I see how other teams operate, I become convinced that Molson just doesn't care how the team does. If he's willing to give a window as long as 8 years then he takes us for fools. IMO, he is a phony, worse than Melnyk. He says things that placate the fan base but I don't believe he is the least bit sincere.

He says things that placate the fan base but I don't believe he is the least bit sincere. I'm of a mixed mind. I'll keep it short, as I think this line of conversation belongs in the thread on the main board. There's something to be said for continuity. Constant upheaval and change doesn't get anyone or anything further ahead. Change for the sake of change isn't sound strategy either. Shero was assembling some good pieces in NJ. There were moves - acquisition of Subban - that might have gone against that, but they're still amassing assets. This seems more a change out of philosophical differences or a rift than based on the job Shero has done to date. I'm not apologizing for Bergevin or Molson. The former has had more than 3 strikes. But, as long as you limit yourself as an organization during the hiring process you're destined only to run the risk of repeating. So at this point, maybe it's better the devil you know until the right persons at the right time present themselves.

Apparently New Jersey will hire Lindy Ruff as their next coach. I do not think Ruff is a bad coach but the choice goes against the trend of hiring younger coaches and if the Devils prefer an experienced older hand it is interesting that more in-demand names like Laviolette or Gallant did not get the nod.
So basically the hockey side of their organizational structure is set: Brodeur, President; Fitzgerald, GM; Ruff, Head Coach.
Patience likely remains the order of the day because for me the Devils do not look to be a contender anytime soon.

I think the Devils , despite two 1st overall picks, have had some bad luck. Instead of landing a McDavid or a Matthews they get Hischier and Hughes. Decent players but at this point, they don't look like difference makers.

Yeah, that could be.
The top kids from the 2019 (Hughes, Kakko, Dach) did not have big impacts as 18-19 year old, though they certainly need another season or two to see how they hit stride. Interestingly though, if you look at the numbers themselves, Kotkaniemi probably edged them by a hair or two with the first season he put together. Montreal fans should probably try harder to keep that in mind.
Hischier, three years into his NHL career, looks like a good player who will be productive in the league for a long time. But he certainly does not look like a centre who can impose his will on games consistently. 2017 turned out to be a complicated year to be picking right there at the top. Pettersson, Makar, and Heiskanen turned out to be the studs. But it is notable that a handful of kids who went in the top 10 and who are now 21 years old have made little or impact at all.
Let us hope that the quality that seems apparent through the top 10-11 prospects in 2020 does not turn out to be a 2017 redux.
