Not the good Crunch either. This team has nothing to do with Nestle.
Well....the Dogs have put two wins together. A winning streak. Weird. I'm not used to this. A solid 5-3 over a horrible Syracuse Crunch team.
There was very little I didn't like abut this game. More on the bad stuff later.
Good: Ryan O'Byrne had a solid game. Just very, very good tonight. Blocked some shots, cleared the zone effectively, skated hard to get the icing calls....a great night for him. I would like to see him a little more physical. He definetly has the size to do it, but if he's having some excellent results in the other parts of his game, you can't really complain.
Matt D'Agostini was fantastic tonight. 2 goals, 1 assist and 1st star. Fans of the Guelph Storm should be happy. Kid played well with Maxim Lapierre. Showed a lot of hussle tonight and worked very hard and it paid off. Good to see him have a great game.
Maxim Lapierre conitnues to play well. This was the first home game he wasn't selected as the hardest working Bulldog. Mainly because his goal and assist made him third star. had 6 big hits in the third period alone. He is tied for the Bulldogs lead in goal scoring with Matt D'Agostini.
Mikhail Grabovski is very fun to watch. Kid wants the puck all of the time. He has some amazing stick handling skills and his acceleration with the puck is astounding. Only drawback is that he's little. He gets hit off the puck often and took a shoulder to the head tonight that knocked his helmet off and his head hit the ice. He was prett woozy going to the bench, but it turned out he was okay and was said to be in a good mood after the game. He was named the hardest working Bulldog of the night. It was a well deserved honour as he created many scoring chances for himself and Jonathon Ferland. He always backchecks and his forechecking abiltiy is also very good. He really isn't afraid to do anything and consistently follows through on his checks. If he didn't wear a visor and was named Dave Smith, Don Cherry would love this kid.
Andrei Kostitsyn played well. Showed some flashes of offensive brilliance. Although it's not showing on the score board, he's quickly becoming a well rounded player. He's become a very good penalty killer and there's always the chance of him breaking out down the ice. He's throwing body checks and tonight it got right into a scrum wrapped his arm around a Crunch players head and got chest to chest with him until things calmed down. He's also become rather fearless.
None of the other Bulldogs had spectacular games, however, none had poor games either. Well....with one exception. More on that later.
Corey Locke did not have a bad game, but he continues to unimpress. He doesn't show much heart, but he's a type of player that still manages to get points no matter how hard I boo him. He still makes me angry every game and I don't think that will ever change. I'm also tired of hearing girls say he's their favourite player 'cause he's hot'. Gah. Kyle Chipchurra played okay. He made a couple of bad passes and failed to get a puck cleared that resulted in a goal, however, he shouldn't have had to clear that puck. Which brings me to......
Bad: Patrick Traverse. This guy is amazingly terrible. I don't get it at all. How does he even have a job? Not only was he the culprit on a goal, but he followed it up with a bad penalty. He seems to do whatever he can to help this team lose. He's a horrible influence on O'Byrne. The award for worst Bulldog goes to Don Lever. Again.
This man may be the reason some of our young guys do not make the NHL. Check out this stat. The Bulldogs are 1 for their last 42 on the power play. 1 for 42!!!!! This is fully and completely Don Lever's fault. It's unacceptable. How is a team supposed to do well if they have no system on the power play? You can tell they don't have a system because it's entirely unorganized. Just terrible.
The other problem I have with Lever is that 1) He never seems to have the same line two games in a row and 2) He makes poor decisions in regards to line changes. For the most part they end up resulting in odd man rushes for the opposing team. The worst part of this is this: The Crunch were manhadling the Bulldogs. Chipchurra had his helmet ripped off and was blind sided with a shoulder to the head and then the head shot to Grabovsky occured shortly after. I'm not even going to get into the argument about head shots being cracked down on....cause they're not. Anyway....not only does Lever send out Kostitsyn after Grabovsky goes down on the ensuing faceoff, he left the team unprotected with three smaller players when it was clear that Syracuse was not happy with losing. Not once after an offensive player was roughed up did Don send out D'Agostini, Stortini and Aubin. 3 big guys who can handle themselves. It's coaching 101. He failed to take that course apparently. He worries me.
I'm looking forward to three wins in a row, but we need the power play to get going.
FYI...the combined Buffalo/Rochester record is 20-1-1. Wow.
Aeros tomorrow night.
