BryantNBA Basketball icon Kobe Bryant, 41, has reportedly died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on Sunday.
Numerous outlets reported that Bryant was in his private helicopter with several others when it crashed.
Pepperdine Graphic, Pepperdine's student-run newspaper, published a tweet on Sunday that showed an image of the helicopter and smoke in the distance.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department said at least five people died in the crash around 10 AM.
"It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Kobe Bryant and four others in a helicopter crash in Calabasas," Calabasas Mayor Alicia Weintraub said during a press conference.
Weintraub also said the helicopter crashed in a remote field and no one on the ground was hurt. Authorities said the helicopter was a Sikorksy S-76B model.
There is currently no information about the others who died in the crash.

One of the greats that passed way to soon. RIP It's remarkable, the number of celebs of all walks of life that have lost their lives to accidents in helicopters and light aircraft.

I'm still in shock. When playing backyard basketball, it was either Kobe or Jordan that we tried to emulate when taking the fictional buzzer beater. He was truly idolized. As an athlete and a competitor, he is one of the all time greats.
RIP Black Mamba

It was just 15 months ago that the owner of Leicester City football club died after his helicopter crashed after lifting from the stadium grounds.

I've got no problem flying in a reasonable plane, but I can't say I've ever been keen to fly in a helicopter.

I read that Kobe had a number of issues with his joints and sitting in a car for hours, to get to the Staples centre or downtown' would basically lock him up and he took a helicopter because he got there quicker and there were no lingering effects
