Lapierre produces more and more

Maxim Lapierre has found his offensive touch with the Hamilton Bulldogs. The 21 year old forward posts an average of a point per game, of which he is very proud, after 11 matches with the Canadiens farm team.
"I hope to continue to produce at the same rate," he said yesterday. "I make a personal challenge of it. It could be said that each time I touch the puck something happens."
Lapierre presents a record of four goals and seven assists along with a differential of +7, another high on the Bulldogs.
"I was scoring forward until I found myself with the Cap-de-la-Madeleine team in the Midget AAA League," he recalled. "It was at this stage of my career that I was transformed into a defensive forward."
The player born in Saint-Léonard all the same provided a production of 40 points in 32 games for Cap-de-la-Madeleine. In the junior ranks he had seasons of 43, 61 and 52 points with the Montréal and PEI Rocket.
Anything to improve
In his first professional season last year, Lapierre piled up 36 points in 73 games, a total exceeding his hopes.
"I practice a lot in order to develop my offensive skills," continued the 21 year old player, who was the third choice of the Canadiens (61st in the NHL) in the 2003 draft.
"For two years, I have in particular used an apparatus that helps the development of puck handling which the Canadiens gave me," he underlined. "I also strengthen the power of my shot by shooting pucks at a wall in the park."
Sounds like the wall in question is about to break down!
On the right path
Lapierre is obviously the Canadiens best prospect in Hamilton at this time.
It is he whom the Habs called upon when Radek Bonk was a question mark for a game against the Buffalo Sabres two weeks ago.
It is possible that he will again have to join the roster of the parent club for the string of three games in four nights which would take him to Ottawa and Florida next week.
"Lappy has had an excellent beginning to the season," commented Don Lever. "He sometimes doesn't make the right play, but his work ethic and his desire to do well can't be questioned. When he makes a mistake, it is often because he wanted to do too much."
"We are pleasantly surprised by his start to the season. He must continue to improve his play without the puck, but he has the talent and the skating ability to play in the NHL. He also shows good leadership."
Tight vote for the post of captain
On this subject, Lever held a vote by his players in order to name a captain yesterday. The poll however did not make it possible to establish a winner.
"Two or three players got the majority of the votes, so I'm thinking of ending the debate by using an alternating system," the Bulldogs' coach indicated. "Last year the team was too young to have a captain, but this season we have players who can fill the position."
