Sportsnet showing old playoff games tonight. Game 2 of Habs- Kings on from 7 - 9:30 on Sportsnet East. Just found this now. I had most those games on VHS tapes somewhere. Imagine wore out now as watched 10 times over. I see they had the Canucks playoffs from '82 on last night. Stuff like that is when you notice how much game has changed isn't it? So much more physical back then. Led to more stoppage in play. Slowed the game down so much. King Richard though was putting on quite the display. Seemed like goalies back then could do that more offen. I mean control playoff series more. Roy did it a couple of times, Steve Penny I remember, King Richard. Able to take a barely playoff caliber team and take them deep, even to a cup. Puzzling??

They had the stick game on yesterday again. Quite the exciting game. Desjardins was all over the ice. He had a chance at a 4th goal. In overtime they were saying Habs were best team on 5 on 5 that year. I never noticed that before.
This has to be one of Habs 10 greatest games of recent times. I liked the Koivu return game. Theodore game against the Bruins, Roy against the Rangers. Any of those games were better than the comeback against the Rangers game.

Sportsnet showed Game 3 of '89 Finals yesterday. Walter scored in double overtime to put us up 2-1 in series. On a powerplay from Richer. We were close to winning a Cup. Both teams were very close. Hard to believe Flames beat Roy with our defense at the time. Robinson/Chelios/Desjardins makes a good First 3. Green/Svoboda/Ludwig makes a deep defense. Flames were playing well though, Gary Roberts, Gilmour, MacInnis. They had a good team. Hard to believe they only won 1 Cup.
We lacked that one big scorer what hurt us just enough for the Flames to claim this Cup. For Keane was playing with Bobby Smith and Naslund on our first line. Corson was taking a shift on Gainey/Carbonneau line. McPhee took a few as did Walter. Richer/Skrudland/McPhee played well I thought but noticed Richer wasn't on the ice much in overtime.
Big difference in the game to game now is the passing. So much more stick to stick. Creates offense and if we in control of puck be little less it ends up in our own net. Noticed Richer turned it over twice in overtime. BUt in the offensive zone I don't think it is as important. Our defensemen were all good passers. Which I think is big deal for defenseman. More important than a forward. Robinson, Chelios, Desjardins all good passers. Only one I noticed who turned it over was Ludwig. Seems like our defense turns puck over much more now. Games is faster though, they had more time back then.

I did a little searching on '89 Finals yesterday. Found where Ryan Walter said Canadiens thought they had series won and took their foot off the gas a little. While the Flames wanted it more. McDonald, etc.. Also found some Flames players saying they beside themselves after a blown call by Kerry Fraser in double overtime Game 3. Which lead to Walter's PP goal giving the Canadiens a 2-1 lead in series. They thought the Canadiens were over celebrating on the bench and muttered to themselves it is not over yet!

At 8AM this morning on Sportsnet - Montreal wins the Cup. Plan the parade...oops, with 2 meters separation of course, and less than 15 people, and...never mind, do it virtually.

At 8AM this morning on Sportsnet - Montreal wins the Cup. I've seen those '93 games many times. I have most on tape. On the '89 Finals, was Claude Lemieux injured? He wasn't in Game 3, Keane was playing with Smith and Naslund. But in Game 5 he is back in, scored the opening goal. Looking at his stats, he was way down in playoff points. Thinking he was playing injured?

Learned something I never knew but always wondered about. Claude Lemieux was on Hockey Central last Thursday. Said he requested a trade from Montreal. He said he didn't want to play in all the pressure, wanted to try it somewhere different.
I never knew that before. It was puzzling at the time but I figured he had done something to tarnish the CH. Because around then they were moving many who had. Chelios, Corson, Carbonneau, etc...

That's what I thought too. He had a reputation as a diver & I thought at the time that management was just tired of his behaviour.
