690 had a discussion other day on best goaltending performance callers had ever seen. Many were saying Halak during the '10 playoffs. I can understand that because imagine many are young can't remember Roy or Dryden. Commentators were saying Moog in '81 upset against us. To me, best goaltending I ever saw was Roy during Rangers overtime game in '86 playoffs. Parent for Flyers had similar against Bruins during their '70s Cup runs.

Agree completely on Roy in 86. I think the OT shots were something like 12 - 2 in less than 10 minutes.
I found the game summary on hockey-reference.com. The overall shots for the game were 47-29 for NY.
Hard to believe Roy was only 20 at the time.

Great goaltending displays make up most of our playoff highlights since 1993. Theodore was outstanding in knocking out the Bruins in 2001-02--his Hart-Vezina year. Boston had finished with 101 pts. 1st in the East. We were 8th with 87 pts. Koivu had returned from cancer. Gilmour was leading by example, as always. But Theo was the difference. The Bruins tied the series at 2 in Montreal--the McLaren-clothesline-on-Zednik game. Game 5 in Boston: Outshot 44-13. .977. 2-1 W. Game 6 in Montreal: Outshot 35-18. .971. 2-1 W. Thank you, Theo! See ya, Bruins!

See ya, Bruins! It's funny you mention this Dennis Leary did a show at JFL a couple of years after and was talking about this. He was talking about how the Bruins were supposed to win the cup but then, of course, montreal has to ruin it, your captain comes back from cancer.... on and on he went.... good times.

The 2011 Halakian run was one of the most dominant performances I've seen ... Jose Theodore's 2001-02 season is up there as is Patrick Roy's 60-save performance in the 1994 playoffs ... we used this clip in one of the GDTs earlier this year ...

Just looked up that series, Dis. Thanks for the nudge! Roy finished third in Vezina voting that season. After missing Game 3 due to appendicitis (Ron Tugnutt's only playoff game for Montreal), Roy convinced doctors to let him return for Game 4--a 5-2 win--making 39 saves. He wouldn't have an appendectomy for two weeks. Then came the 60-save performance, putting us up 3-2 going home. We lost 3-2...and Roy called out his team/coaching strategy post-game. Here's the clip. Possible Roy perspective: We're defending champs. I'm a 2-time Conn Smythe winner....proving my worth again the past two games--99 saves on 102 shots--coming back from appendicitis, no less.
We had a chance--at home--to send the Bruins packing, and we put up a measly 22 shots? I recall being very disappointed with his performance (.839) in Game 7, in which we were down 5-1 five minutes into the third period. We got 2 back to make the score "respectable". But after seeing this clip, I wonder if those comments negatively affected his teammates for Game 7. Certainly didn't light a fire. Whatever....it was the final flash of playoff brilliance for Roy in the CH, as we missed the show the next season, and he was gone the following December...en route to his first Cup with the Avs.

Sportsnet was showing Game 1 of '89 Finals yesterday. First time I have been able to re-watch. I VHS taped those games back at the time but had to tape over after we lost. The pain. But watching the game now, 31 years later, Larry Robinson was really playing well that series. But MacInnis was lights out. I met his dad a few years ago at the Bell Center following a game. March of 2017 I believe. It was a bad loss considering we were in playoff hunt at time. His dad said he was working for the Black Hawks in some capacity. I was a bit down. His dad said well you lose some and win some.
Vernon had a .897% that playoff. How we ever lost, Flames must of been great team to be us with .897 goal tending.
