What is everybody favorite game from '93 miracle playoffs? Mine is Game 5 in Quebec. Muller scored in overtime. I thought for sure Nordiques would beat us when they were up 2-0 first two games in series

Re-watching these '93 Cup games Carbonneau shutting down Gretzky was strong point of that team. I always like a good 4th line, especially if center good on faceoffs. If he is good defensively and a faceoff artist gives an edge on defensive zone draws on penalty kill and pulling their goalie late in games. It is a tangible asset, even more so because generally they don't make much money. If your 4th line can neutralize, or slow down a Gretzky type it gives your team a stronger chance to win. Even if they have a great 1st line, if our 4th line is better than theirs it will give us the advantage. The Jarvis/Gainey/Roberts line of the past, Pocket Rocket in '73/'71. Even Halpern or Moore in those teams of early '11s.

I'd say about 30-40% of our goals are, to me, just bad goals being allowed by sub-par goalies. Another 30-40% are goalies being completely out of position due to weak zone defenses and our guys had easy goals into empty nets. The remainder were the only "acceptable" goals in that the goalies were beaten by strong shots from scoring positions.

I think the goalies they faced were Hextall, Fuhr, Healy and Hrudey. Other than Fuhr, none of those guys were close to being HOF material and capable of matching Roy.

The game has evolved so much in 30 years. Half the goals that Gretzky scored wouldn't happen in todays NHL. The goalies have gotten that much better. That's why Ovechkins goal scoring is more impressive to me, although he is becoming more of a let it rip scorer... a la Brett Hull

Patrick Roy was a mano goalie versus goalie type. The only times I think he lost he had a chance to win was Calgary in '89, and Detriot in '96.

Sorry, I meant '97. Memory lapse their for awhile. I remember Bowman saying in interview he acquired Hasek to put them over the top in '02. He blamed Wings failure in playoffs from '99 to then on goaltending.
