Oh boy. Not a fun night.
Well, we managed to give up the lead on 4 occasions and that's never good. The Moose took advantage of some terrible goaltending and the Dogs didn't take enough advantage of some terrible goaltending and the Moose won the game 5-4.
Former AHL League and Playoff MVP Wade Flaherty had a terrible game for Manitoba. We scored 3 goals on our first 5 shots, but couldn't keep enough pressure on him.
There wasn't much good tonight. We were outplayed at every level by a team that up until tonight was behind us in points.
Good: Again, not much. The line of Andrei Kostitsyn, Mikhail Grabovski and Duncan Milroy played well. The Dunkster, tonight's first star, notched his first career hat trick and his team leading 7th, 8th and 9th goals of the year. He really played well and he found a solid linemate in Mikhail Grabovski who assisted on all three and earned the Maxim Lapierre Hardest Working Bulldog Award. Grabovski continues to impress and I'm fairly certain he will be the Bulldogs leading scorer next season. Kostitsyn played a good game even though I'm sure he was bummed about being sent back down. He got an assist and this line was a combined +6 on the night.
Another line was excellent tonight, but only in the first period. Kyle Chipchurra, Ajay Baines and Jonathan Ferland played well together. Came out flying in the first period. They weren't bad in the second or third periods, they just weren't as noticeable.
Average: I'd say Maxim Lapierre was average. He didn't have his usual step tonight. Lever put him on a line with Locke and Lambert and that seemed to bring him down. Just wasn't the usual Max.
Bad: Pretty much every one else. My least favourite players, but favourite whipping boys Patrick 'Reverse', 'Minus' Lambert and Corey Locke were all -3 and had horrible games. Much worse than usual. Locke really doesn't seem to care anymore. Our leading scorer last year has seen his ice time dwindle. It's probably the best thing Don Lever has done in awhile.
Yann Danis was disappointing. He made some spectacular saves, but his angles were way off and he wasn't seeing the puck well. I think all 5 goals were pretty weak. Time to put Little Slav in net for Saturday.
Although we scored 4 goals this team was nowhere close to winning. Manitoba just was a little less terrible and they walked away with two points.
Hopefully, we'll have better luck Saturday against the Rochester Americans. Aw....man.
