Dionne still had 4 very productive years remaining at that time.
83-84 - 92 pts. in 66 games. 84-85 - 126 pts. in 80 games. 85-86 - 94 pts. in 80 gaames. 86-87 - 74 pts. in 67 games.
He may have also revived/prolonged Lafleur's Habs' career. I know points don't automatically transfer...but we had scoring prowess, too, in Naslund and Smith.
I agree with Savard, though...asking for rookie Chelios tipped the scales. Losing Gainey would've been a tough one as well. Ludwig also turned out to be a reliably tough customer.
The "one that got away" for me in that era was selecting Mark Napier instead of Mike Bossy in '77. Doug Wickenheiser over Denis Savard was another ouch.

Good story, thanks Dis.
Not quite the same calibre of player, jeje, but at least we had Gilbert on the '93 Cup run. It has been so long I forget. Was he Marcel's nephew, his little brother, or his son?

Big price for 32 year old. I loved Savard that way. He made those big trades. It made things interesteing.

Interesting that he didn't go for the older centerman back then, but did in 1990 for Denis Savard. Dionne had some productive years from 1983 to1988, better than Savard, but giving up Chelios wouldn't have been worth it.

Getting a #1 center was a priority with Savard though. He made the Bobby Smith trade immediately after the DIonne rumour. So, it sounds like he was pursueing a top #1 center in league. He acquire Muller too, as soon as Smith declined and Savard never worked out. Having depth at center no doubt played a role in those 2 cups though.

I thought this was going to be Bergevin tries to get Marcel Dionne. Typical low risk low reward move!
