He shines in the AHL, but never seems to stick in the NHL. It is amazing to watch his PP performance and shot with Laval compared to how he looks with his limited ice time with the Habs. The classic tweener. Things will not get any easier as some of the young draft picks with bigger upside pass him in the depth chart.

I would keep him for depth in Laval. Not going to get anything

I agree that it would be nice to have Hudon in Laval because he is such an effective AHL sniper and a Quebecois player. Moreover, his presence there does not really block any kid with clear NHL potential since Ylonen (RW) is basically the only winger prospect who fits that profile.
But I am not sure it is worth trying to hold the guy hostage. At most Montreal can only hold Hudon's rights for 2020-21 and if Julien does not care for the kid's game then letting him try to catch on with another club seems okay. There are literally dozens of tweeners looking for a break, so the idea that another GM is going to give a pick for guys caught on that treadmill is just not realistic.

Toronto would be a perfect fit for him. They're looking for someone cheap depth on 3 and 4th lines.

I hope that he finds a place and becomes a regular NHL'er. I watched him a lot in St. John's and he was a leader and always the hardest working guy on a team short on talent.

Ideally we manage to flip him for another guy in a similar situation.... usually this leads to both guys flopping on their new teams as well, but you never know. Moving McCarron for Dauphin, or Kristo for Thomas, fit in that same kind of trade. Hard to think 2-3 years ago some were suggesting he'd take over Plekanec's spot as a 3d line center with ease...

His problem is basically not being able to displace someone on the top nine. Julien is prickly about how fourth liners are supposed to play in defensive transitions and of course in the d-zone and that makes it hard for a guy like Hudon.
Regarding Toronto, I doubt they would want him. They have a lot of skilled tweeners (Petan, Malgin, Bracco) who are basically in the same predicament as Hudon.

He's not big and fast enough to play a hard game so his shallow tool belt isn't going to get him anything more the a journeyman career.
He tries....
