Kaiden Guhle and the PA Raiders now know that the WHL season will start on January 8th. It will be a different format, with teams only playing games within their division. So teams in MB/SK, AB, BC, and the US will only play within their geographic boundaries during the regular season.
Guhle will be busy though, as he is expected to be part of Canada’s WJC selection camp and hopefully part of the team itself. If that is the case, he will be playing top level hockey in December through to early January, in time to return to his club team.

I wonder how the world juniors will play out. I think the shut down will help the smaller countries, since they will have a better idea of who there main roster is. The big teams are going to have a harder time selecting a team, since so much has changed in the last 9 months. I also wonder if the Rangers are going to left Laf play in the tournament and risk getting hurt before the season.

We don’t talk about Leskinen much, but he had a productive game today with two nice helpers.

Earlier this week, I rewatched a bit of last summer’s Hlinka games to get a fresh read on newbie Kaiden Guhle. I really liked his play in that tournament. I even watched him play against Mysak in the CAN-CZE game, but that was such a mismatch that it did no justice to Mysak’s game. Here are a ton of highlights from that tourney that someone posted on YouTube. He was on the first pairing with Drysdale and also anchored the PK.

Great skater and good strength. As Cranky points out, not much production. There were a few open shots from in close and he was no where near picking a corner. Maybe he can build on his offense. Seems to be a very solid defensive defenseman.

To view Guhle. He certainly was impressive in that game. A bit raw though. Noticed he went out of position often. Once to deliver a hit on Jake Neighbours. He can't do that in NHL. When caught out of position leaves big hole in one side of defense.

Thanks, NW. Do you estimate the mistakes related to overagressiveness and overeagerness are just a reflection of youth and confidence?
In the lead up to the draft, I did not really read scouting reports on Guhle because I felt the logic of picking a talented forward was compelling at #16. How did scouts characterize his hockey IQ?
It is way too early to know, but there are certainly cases of big highly mobile d-men (Komisarek and Dykhuis) who wore the tricolore and ended up only having okay NHL careers because they did not process the game at a high level. I am not saying Guhle reminds of them but sometimes holding a major physical advantage over other players from a young age hides issues.

Watched the vid... hes raw but hes got the basic requirements... size, speed, skating, uses his stick effectively... not an offensive dynamo by any means but pair him with a puck mover and you've got a good pairing..

My sense is he is just so darn competitive that he will use his size and strength as a deterrent to opposing forwards by rubbing them out of the play. How he does that in his D-1 year (this past season) and how he does it once he turns pro will need to be different. Picking his spots is a teachable trait, and this young lad seems to be supremely coachable. Habscheid is a very good coach, so he is in good hands for the next two years. The scouting reports I read were a bit mixed on his hockey IQ. In a recent interview, he did talk about needing to improve his decision making with the puck. That also may be the big rationale as to why he is projected by some to have limited offensive upside. It is definitely a raw part of his game, but you see signs that he can improve it. He has great mobility. A big, tough minute eating defender who is hard to play against, and who can jump into the play and get shots on net is a really valuable asset (albeit not as sexy a pick at first as a fancy scoring winger). I watched a bunch of his games last year (Hlinka, Top Prospects, some league games) and he is a guy who you notice...and usually in a positive light. It will be fun to see how he further develops those raw parts of his game. That will determine his landing spot once he makes the NHL.

More on Guhle, this time from Marc Dumont. Don’t underestimate this kid’s intangibles. IMO, Berg has made attitude a bad word due to his overuse, but this kid oozes high compete level, quiet leadership and great attitude. Team Canada does not hand out letters on their jerseys lightly.

Improve skating - Can do Improve strength -Can do Improve decision making - Where are the drugs that make you smarter!? I have no idea about his decision making, not having focused on him while watching the Hlinka, but if that is an issue, it's not likely being fixed (Exhibit A - Jack Johnson, Cody Ceci) PS Sorry, had to include those two guys to give some jabs to Jim Rutherford. He's forced to buy out JJ and then replaces him with CC. Maybe Rutherford's the one with the low hockey IQ?

All I know is that he needs to be better than Hendrix Lapierre, or Timmins needs to be fired. You just can't miss out on A high-end, high-profile local boy. If he wasn't scouted extensively enough to determine if he could be better than Guhle, just that should be firing offense.

Good for Vejdemo. I really think the time is now for him to make the team out of camp and contribute as fourth line left wing or centre or as the 13th forward. He will be 25 years old in January; he's already played approximately 110 games in the AHL; he's got sufficient size, speed and positional versatility; and frankly the organization is better off letting Poehling, Teasdale, and Hillis the main minutes down the middle for the Rocket.

Gordin with another two points (1+1 today). He now has 9 points (6g 3a) in 5 games in the junior league MHL. He has one heck of a shot, and that is a very nice assist on the OT GWG. Big #78 in white.

This can slide two years if they so choose to keep him in juniors for those years (highly likely).

He reminds me of that older beer league guy who used to be really good but got married, had three kids, and then spent the next 20 years working as an importer/exporter for a beer company. Older, bigger, slower than everybody else... but if it's 11:15 on a Tuesday night and he has the puck on his stick...

Burn down Bergevins trash and start over from scratch. We would be better off with the Knights than our current playoff pretenders.

Norlinder tries the lacrosse goal attempt. Brass ones for a defender... I'M IN LOVE!!! It didn't matter that he failed to score, the fact of him thinking and trying it is what hugely important. It shows that he's thinking on his feet and not simply doing the "standard" looking for a pass and if none, toss it in the crease. Bobby Orr biggest asset was that he did the unexpected. I'm not comparing the kid to Orr, not even Orr dandruff, but it's moves like that have promise of something deeper...

So, Vejdemo is staying home on his team’s road trip after that big hit. Concussion protocols perhaps.
Gordin has been moved up to the VHL, the second men’s league. So he will once again face tougher competition.
And Norlinder gets some more international experience in November.

Although things can certainly derail between now and November 13, that is the current start date for Wisconsin (Caufield....and Gorniak too) to return to play.
