This post is not going to make your jaw drop, like all those monoliths out there, but it will make you go..."hmmmmmmm".
I was reading up on the Canadian WJC camp and the story highlighted a goalie named Devon Levi. It's an achievement to be invited to a Canadian WJC camp and I'd never heard of this guy, so I dug around. He's a 7th round pick of the NJ Devils (2020) and my first thought was....gee, Cayden Primeau was a 7th round goalie pick too. Then I saw that he is playing for Northeaster University and I thought....gee, Primeau played for NU as well. That's a coincidence. While I was checking on Primeau, I saw that he had a Trade button indicating Habs had traded for his draft pick. I clicked on that and saw Montreal obtained that pick from Philly, for a 7th round pick the followiing year. That 7th round pick ended up being Brett Stapley. So at this point we have 3 seventh round picks, all of whom are legitimate NHL player prospects and all of whom were NCAA guys. They may not be impact guys but they should all make the league. Then I see that Stapley's pick was also obtained from the Habs from Philly. That pick turned out to be Rafael Harvey-Pinard. Ok maybe the trail ends there as RHP is probably at Grade B prospect at best. But I'm going to keep my eye out on Gunnarwolfe Fontaine. Firstly because he has such an interesting name and secondly because he's another 7th round pick playing at Northeastern University. Philly traded that 7th rounder to Nashville along with other stuff. Last year Fonataine had 57 points in 45 games for the Chicago Steel, that USHL powerhouse. That's the same team with Sean Farrell, a Habs 4th rounder in 2020.
I'm just amazed at what Philly effectively traded away in 7th round picks. The Flyers could have had Primeau, Stapley, RHP and Fontaine.
Hmmmmmmmmmm
