Disgruntled as I was thinking about past Russian series. Looking at this year's WJC. With no Dach or Lafreniere. Came to conclusion Russia wasn't really that close to us in '72. The initial scouting reports were probably closer to being accurate than we think.
We never had Orr nor Hull in '72. Clearly the best 2 players in the game. Also a bunch of other good players who had skipped to WHA. GUys like JC Tremblay or Derek Sanderson. We iced guys like Bergman or Tallon, Goldsworthy or Parise but were not the talent who jumped to WHA.
In '76, Russia was not close to us. It wasn't until '79/81 era before they over took us. Then it was only briefly as by '84 and '87 we were back on top.
