For personal reasons.

Rutherford's overall legacy is positive because of the Cups, but he has certainly made some curious and suboptimal moves in the effort to keep Crosby and Malkin's window open. The Pittsburgh job may be a complicated one in the not so distant future.

In an interview on Tim and Sid today, Brian Burke was asked about the resignation. He said he hasn't talked to Rutherford about it. He also said that the usual reason is a difference in philosophy and what he meant by that was that there is a difference of opinion in whether the Pens window is still open Burke doesn't think it is and I agree with him. So quite possibly, one of the GM and ownership group wanted to blow it up and start over and the other did not.
A similar situation happened in Vancouver when Trevor Linden left the organization. The prevailing thought is that he thought the team wasn't quite ready, but ownership wanted to make the playoffs. Why else would they sign Beagle and Roussel to silly contracts.
Anyway, it makes sense. Burke also said Rutherford will have the job of his choosing when he decides to return to hockey. I nearly split my sides when I heard that. Really? The luckiest guy in hockey and maybe that's all an owner needs.
