May be available this off season. Could Habs be interested?
Article on line citing we should make a play. Where we have the farm system and extra picks to make such a move. I think he is too much like Weber. Costs be high. If going to do that, why not throw a bundle of money at a Dougie Hamilton? Keep the prospects/picks

Jones may not have had a good season on a really bad Columbus team, but he is a #1 d-man in his prime. He would make any team better and the cost to acquire him will be serious. Beyond the acquisition cost, the problem is Montreal already has $14+ million AAV tied up in two guys on the right side (Weber and Petry), so it just does not seem like a fit. Even if Bergevin wises up and exposes Weber in the expansion draft, I doubt Ronnie Francis picks him.

I posted something about this in the out of town thread several days ago.
Jones has a year left on his deal but has made it clear that he wants to test free agency. I think that's the sticking point. Columbus doesn't want to lose him for nothing so they won't give him away. But, they won't get full value if teams are getting a guy that is going to leave in aa year.
However if a team thinks it is close they could do what EDM did in 2005 and make the trade ( for Pronger) knowing he will likely walk at the end of the season?

Unless Weber retires there is no way to get him under the cap.
Plus he's going to cost 10 million.

Honestly the only reason that Toronto guy Chris Johnston mentioned Montreal in the probable trade destinations for Jones was clicks. The Habs, for cap space limitations and big name vets holding down all the available minutes on the rights side, are actually one of the clubs least likely to get involved with Jones.

I'm really tired of reporters that don't do their homework. The Habs cap situation is obvious to anybody that even glances at CapFriendly. This is the kind of article I expect from veteran hacks like Steve Simmons or Bruce Garrioch. Just bang it out without thinking. Disappointing coming from a younger reporter that definitely knows better.

Even if Bergevin wises up and exposes Weber in the expansion draft, I doubt Ronnie Francis picks him. Canadiens are designed with big physical defense in front of Price. Habs not going to leave Weber unprotected. Don't be silly. Bergs designed the team this way on for that purpose. A big physical punishing defense in front of elite netminding. If smaller finesse forwards go near Price their going to take a beating. Habs want goal scorers looking over their shoulder and hurrying plays/shots. Weber is probably prominent one in this role. Trade Weber going to bring much of this down. Easy to tell as Habs played over their heads when Weber is healthy. In the bubble last playoff, first half of season and of course, this playoff. When Weber's play fell off second half of season Canadiens went in tank. Jones is younger, but costs to acquire him beat too high. If Habs willing to sacrifice the farm I would take a run at elite center instead.
