The Canadiens' first choice in 2006 (20th over all), defenseman David Fischer, is making good progress with the University of Minnesota Gophers. At least according to one NHL scout who saw him play a few weeks ago.
"He wasn't very well covered by our scouting team before the draft", said our scout. "Most didn't see how he could be chosen in the first round, and some wondered if he was worth the pain of selecting in the second round. But I saw him play over the holidays and I was impressed. He's a big kid, confident with the puck, intense and blessed with good hockey sense. We're talking about only one game, but a hockey player is like a singer: no need to listen to the whole disc to know if he can sing. It must be said that the Canadiens did a good job in his case. He'll play in the NHL and he'll be good."
In 23 games Fischer has picked up 5 assists and has a differential of +2.
