Kind words for David FischerMathias Brunet La PresseThe Canadiens' first choice in 2006 (20th over all), defenseman David Fischer, is making good progress with the University of Minnesota Gophers. At least according to one NHL scout who saw him play a few weeks ago. "He wasn't very well covered by our scouting team before the draft", said our scout. "Most didn't see how he could be chosen in the first round, and some wondered if he was worth the pain of selecting in the second round. But I saw him play over the holidays and I was impressed. He's a big kid, confident with the puck, intense and blessed with good hockey sense. We're talking about only one game, but a hockey player is like a singer: no need to listen to the whole disc to know if he can sing. It must be said that the Canadiens did a good job in his case. He'll play in the NHL and he'll be good." In 23 games Fischer has picked up 5 assists and has a differential of +2. - tinyurl.com/2y55xr

Think he'll be up here next season? Up here? as in the Habs? No way, he'll be back at Minnesota, imo he'll need a couple years there. Next year assuming Eric Johnson signs with the Blues (which they wanted him to sign last summer) the Fischer will likely take his spot on the 2nd pairing, meaning considerable more ice time and PP time cause Johnson gets a lot of ice time so hopefully he's gone and Fischer gets to work on his offensive game since right now he gets almost zero PP time and seems to have little confidence in shooting the puck.
