There is a whole lot to like about this OT GWG from Kidney tonight.
Sherbrooke lost 5-2 to Gatineau but Roy still potted another goal and was named third star in the loss.

Habs trade McNiven to Calgary for future considerations. Cslgary sends him to AHL.
It opens up a contract spot and eases the logjam in goal. I doubt there’s much coming back.

Poulin has been playing well, so McNiven was third guy in line at Laval. This helps him play in the AHL and frees up a valuable contract spot. Now at 47 of 50, so can take some contracted bodies back in trades.

Maybe Montreal can use the future considerations for a 6 or7 round pick for someone obscure that they like.

The other “use” of this extra contract spot is to sign a guy like Harris to his ELC and burn a year this season, which requires a 2021-22 contract not one that starts in 2022-23. Or, take two prospects back for an established roster player from the Habs. Or both. So, in addition to giving McNiven an opportunity to play at the AHL level, it does add another small tool to Hughes’ trade toolbox. The how McNiven was handled at times by the Habs is why they so desperately need a much bigger and better player development unit.

You can't develop playing that little and I still would like to see him succeed. He's had a rough life, so some happiness is in order. Good luck, Mike.

I think he's known for a while that Primeau was the golden child, and really, he won't be getting a chance as long as Primeau is seen as a high-end prospect. You can look into the past and see how various goalies got a season or two and the org seemingly decided to give someone else a chance. Goalie development will be tricky since you can only have one guy getting enough games to improve, so if you've lost faith, even if they're decent at the AHL level, they will realize it just through number of starts. Whereas a skater will have a more subtle dropoff than goalies do.

Ottawa vs Hamilton on TSN5 tonight at 7:00pm ET.
A chance to see Myšák and Xhekaj go against Rohrer (Austrian forward and top ranked draft eligible on the 67’s at 80 on Bobby Mac’s list). Good skating defender Jorian Donovan on Hamilton is actually the highest rated draft eligible in the game, coming in at 50th on said list and likely a second rounder.

Kidney had a huge night last night, recording five assists in a 11-2 Titan blowout. #12 in maroon.
Dobeš made 43 saves in a 3-2 losing effort. Stapley had a goal and an assist for Denver. Guhle added an assist.
On Friday night, Xhekaj was the hero with the shootout winner. Guhle popped a goal. Roy had the GWG in a two goal and one assist night. Struble had a goal and two helpers. Dobeš made 49 saves in a 4-3 win.

Struble and Harris celebrating a conference first place. They gets them good seeding for the Hockey East championship tournament. They also get a bye for the first round.

I saw Harris and Struble in person on Saturday against Merrimack.
I just can’t figure out Harris, although I can say he’s a fabulous skater, shifty, moves well laterally and in tight spaces and always seems to be in the right spot. But I just wish he would flash more offensively, and really assert himself more. He leads the PP unit but he doesn’t have much of a shot and the PP isn’t organized around trying to get him good looks. You just wish he could put up Adam Fox type numbers when he was at Harvard. They are good comps as far as size (both listed at 5'11" and 185 lbs) but Fox was a 1.2 PPG guy in 3 years at Harvard while Harris is 0.7 PPG in 4 years at NU. Of course you sign the guy and try to develop him but he doesn't have a big frame so his only path to being a top 4 guy is if he can drive offense. Otherwise he's a taller version of Victor Mete.
Struble is still a bit raw, which is what people said when he was drafted. I saw him live in his freshman season and he’s better as a junior but hasn't improved as much as I hoped he would. Struble has way more bulk than Harris, plays with more of an edge, and seems to have more offensive instincts but still a bit undisciplined and goes long stretches where you don’t really notice him. Reminds me a bit of PK Subban with his build and style of play but without PKs confidence and cockiness. Overall I like Struble's upside more than Harris but his PPG numbers haven't budged in 3 years either. His best comp may be Ryan McDonagh who wasn't an offensive guy at Wisconsin but ended up being a terrific all-around dman who could play in every situation because he did everything well, had good size/strength, and was a tough kid.

Does this mean we need to tone down our expectations of what our D may look like in 3 years? Those are 2 of our higher expectation prospects. At least Struble was, IMO. Harris could be a dependable #4 at best, which is just fine. Or end up on the bottom pair.
Norlinder, Guhle, Struble, Harris, Mailloux, Romanov, Xhekaj. The big hopes, to me, at least in an offensive capacity are Norlinder and Mailloux. Those are the 2 who have shown scoring ability. The new regime offers hope for Norlinder, since Berg had changed firewagon hockey to fire hydrant hockey and HuGo (I love that shortened Front office name) have a completely different approach. Norlinder will love Marty.
We still need to add, IMO. This does not appear to be a good year for Dmen. There's a Czech or Slovak kid ranked high, but can't recall his name. Maybe Hughes can pick up a better prospect from one of the trades in the next 10 days or in the summer.

Gordin plays on one of the weakest MHL teams, so they lost B2B games today and yesterday to the top team, the junior version of CSKA Moskva 4-3 and 3-1 today. Gordin was front and centre for Kapitan though, with a goal and an assist yesterday and the only goal today. #94
Add Gordin to the list of prospects who could benefit from Adam Nicholas’ tutoring. His skating is better than last year (not hard), but he is no burner, that’s for sure.

Dobeš a finalist for three awards. Penn State upset Ohio State last weekend in the Big10 opening round, so now they sit on the cusp of a NCAA tournament invite but need a bunch of other games to go their way. Lots of scoreboard watching and having to practice without knowing if they will play again this season.
Wisconsin’s season is done, so that is the end of Gorniak’s NCAA career. The Habs have his rights until August 15, but I cannot see a scenario where they offer an ELC. An AHL deal later in the year, perhaps, but there are lots of other guys who need to be signed to NHL deals and who will need some playing time in Laval too, so…

Roy gets #29 in a 5-1 win tonight. #10 gets that shot off without any wasted energy. Quite the shot and ability to often find the quiet spots on the ice.
That is also a 16 game point streak for Roy, which ties an all time Sherbrooke Phoenix record.

2 goals (30 and 31) and an assist so far late in the third. A new team consecutive points streak at 17 and adding to his league leading point total.
Oh, and 82 points in 42 games so far. Bonkers for an 18 year old fifth round pick (yes he was the first overall QMJHL draft pick two years prior).

Another prospect whose season has come to a close: Alexander Gordin. Neither his MHL team (Kapitan) or his KHL squad (Sochi) came close to making the playoffs. His contract is up at the end of this season, so who knows where he signs and plays next season. I assume he is sticking in Russia for now given the political uncertainty going on. He is still just 20 years old.
Otto Leskinen is still technically a guy whose rights the Habs still protect. Whether he ever comes back is a big question though. He was with the Finnish team in the KHL (Jokerit) who withdrew from their playoffs. He signed with a new Liiga club (Tappara Tampere) and had an assist today.

Kapanen back in action today for the first time since February 23rd. He was with his club’s U20 team and had two goals and an assist. He now has 13 points in 8 games in the junior leagues and has also played in the top and second mens’ leagues at times this season (including a two game loan to another Liiga team in there). When you also add his national team appearances, it must be hard getting any flow going bouncing around so much and he likely has to check his GPS to figure out where the heck he is tonight.

NCAA playoffs were underway last night for some prospects with Biondi scoring in a 5-2 UMD win and Stapley with a goal and assist in Denver’s win. Both teams continue their mini series tonight. Struble, Harris and Tuch all start their playoffs with single elimination games starting tonight.
Kidney had a very nice primary assist last night. #12 in maroon on the video.
A few guys injured right now. Farrell, Myšák, Simoneau, Mailloux all our with various injuries. Heineman is practicing with his SHL and should be returning soon.
