i check out this site a lot, i think it's the most thorough site for prospects by far. i've been reading constantly how this team is no different than 5 or 10 years ago, but i beg to differ. i don't believe we've ever been this deep on the farm and in the system. so i did a bit of analysis according to hockey's future. they rank prospects on a scale of 1-10 points with: 6-7 point ratings being potential 3rd-4th line, 5-6th d-men or backup goalies 7.5-10 point ratings being potential impact 1st line or star players any player with a D rating is unlikely to reach potential so i did not count them Team | Defence | | Forwards | | Goalies | | Overall | Team | 6-7 | 7.5-10 | 6-7 | 7.5-10 | 6-7 | 7.5-10 | 7.5-10 | Anaheim | 8 | 1 | 10 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 | Atlanta | 7 | 0 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | Boston | 4 | 2 | 11 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 8 | Buffalo | 7 | 0 | 4 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 1 | Calgary | 5 | 0 | 10 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 2 | Carolina | 6 | 0 | 5 | 0 | 3 | 1 | 1 | Chicago | 5 | 2 | 21 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 4 | Colorado | 6 | 0 | 8 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 4 | Columbus | 11 | 0 | 8 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 5 | Dallas | 4 | 2 | 11 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 4 | Detroit | 3 | 1 | 6 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 4 | Edmonton | 7 | 2 | 6 | 4 | 4 | 0 | 6 | Florida | 5 | 1 | 9 | 1 | 3 | 0 | 2 | Los Angeles | 7 | 2 | 9 | 4 | 3 | 1 | 7 | Minnesota | 4 | 1 | 7 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 5 | Montreal | 5 | 2 | 9 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 8 | Nashville | 3 | 1 | 7 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 2 | New Jersey | 7 | 0 | 7 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 2 | Rangers | 7 | 1 | 11 | 3 | 0 | 1 | 5 | Islanders | 5 | 0 | 9 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 2 | Ottawa | 5 | 1 | 10 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 2 | Philadelphia | 8 | 1 | 6 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 3 | Phoenix | 6 | 0 | 8 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 3 | Pittsburgh | 4 | 2 | 7 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 | San Jose | 3 | 1 | 8 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 4 | St. Louis | 4 | 1 | 8 | 3 | 4 | 1 | 5 | Tampa Bay | 7 | 2 | 6 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 4 | Toronto | 5 | 1 | 6 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 | Vancouver | 3 | 1 | 5 | 1 | 4 | 1 | 3 | Washington | 6 | 0 | 9 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 3 |

we are tied for 1st in the league with 8 can't miss prospects in the system soon to make an impact on our already very young roster, with kosty sr. the only one on the team right now, down the pipeline we have:
Emelin Fischer Price Danis Grabovsky Kosty jr. Chipchurra
adding them to: Ryder Higgins Plekanec Komisarek Lapierre Latendresse Perezhogin Halak
i think the future is very, very bright, with our recent drafting success i see no reason why timmins and co cannot continue to find us diamonds in the rough.

I would replace Danis with O'Byrne, since Danis is a UFA at the end of the season, so we could lose him. O'Byrne is in the mold of Komisarek, big fast strong skates well, can crush people. Give him another year or two and we'll see how he has progressed. I think he will be a regular within 3 years or so.
The newest drafted players are looking very good so far but we'll see where they are in 3-4 years from now. Maxwell, White, Fischer and Carle are all interesting for sure. I really like Fischer although he's likely many years away, White is a guy I think will make the nhl one day since he can play on the bottom lines if things don't work out for him offensively. Maxwell got a lot of praise from the coaching staff at camp/preseason, but we'll see how his game translates at the pro level, to me he's very skilled but plays a zero intensity game, very passive. Carle we will likely get to see in Hamilton next year, so he's more in line with the '05 guys since he was a late B day. I really want to see what he can do in the ahl cause he has put up some damn impressive numbers in the Q for a defensemen.
Add to that we have a likely 5 picks in the top 75 this summer, so I could see them getting some more interesting players.

Maybe it's just me, but I like Valentenko too. You can't be one of the top defensemen at the WJC and not be a decent prospect. On top of which, as you say, our Russian scout really is extremely good and Valentenko was his pick....wanted him a lot sooner than the round he was drafted in, too.

The one time I saw Valentenko play, he was impressive. But the team still needs an elite prospect on defense, imo. Gainey had a real chance of getting one using Souray but chose otherwise. (Someone like Matt Carle would have looked really good on our blue line)
Azner projects to be the only blue chipper on defense in this year's draft. I sincerely hope that a serious effort is made to move up to get him. We will likely pick mid round and bottom third which projects to be mostly forwards. I mean, how many quality wingers, centres and goalies does the team really need? The team is loaded with them already. Meanwhile, O'Byrne or perhaps Emelin is our best prospect on defense.

Don't hold your breath. They have mentioned that there isn't enough interest. In fact during the lock out they prefered to show the McDonald's Caravan. It was basically French Canadian NHLers touring the province playing pond hockey. RDS even refuses to show a QMJHL game a week. It's the Habs, then the occasional Sens game.

That's the shameful thing about living in Montreal. Basically, it's a crappy sports town. If it isn't the Habs, 90% don't give a crap. The Expos left with barely a whimper. In the last 20 years Montreal and its northern and southern suburbs (Laval & Longueuil... and not to mention Verdun) all lost their QMJHL franchises. In fact if I wanted to see a junior game I'd have to drive at least an hour to either Drummondville or Gatineau. Again using last weekend's Bulldogs game, Montreal's only all sports radio [Team 990] hardly mentioned it. I figure it was better advertised in the French media, though again, I barely heard a peep about it on RDS. I'd love for the Q-league to try Montreal again. I'd really love if the Habs would do like Philly has done. Bring the farm team to Montreal. Get the kids used to the attention, environment, etc. Ultimately, I fear that it would fail. At least I know that I'd be a regular.

Our future is brighter ...but they aren't all going to make the team. So they all can't be "can't miss" cause some will miss, unless Gainey trades them. I haven't been to the site, and admittedly I dont follow the prospects as close as I used to, but any site that labels Danis a "can't miss prospect" ...well I question that. Danis won't be suiting up in the NHL for a long time, maybe never.
