Game 1 of the playoffs for the Dogs turns out to be Carey Price night. He tosses a shut out and is the first star in his pro playoff debut as the Dogs defeat Rochester 2-0. Rochester outshot Hamilton 34-30 and the Dogs were without Kostitsyn and Grabovski. Stortini and Lapierre (empty net) get the goals for Hamilton.

Three AHL games, three goals against. First pro playoff game is a goose-egg.
Wow. Wait til this kid is 20!

i told ya, this kid is really good and may very well be starting in october for the big boys. i think they'll leave him in hamilton but if he's better than huet and halak, like i believe he already is, he'll be the #1 in 6 months time.
by far the best junior goalie i've ever seen live.

Really glad to hear this but on the flip side, what does this say about Danis & his future in the Habs organization? He plays all season & is replaced by a 19 year old rookie for the playoffs. I haven't seen him play at all this year. Could he be done in Montreal?

Really glad to hear this but on the flip side, what does this say about Danis & his future in the Habs organization? He plays all season & is replaced by a 19 year old rookie for the playoffs. I haven't seen him play at all this year. Could he be done in Montreal? I made a few posts earlier this season about my thoughts on Danis: …Danis was pretty weak in goal. He doesn't look confident and his rebound control is not very strong. On the first goal he was screened as the Dallas player did a spin-a-rama move in the slot and fired a low shot along the ice. However, I think he could have done a better job covering the bottom of the net. He seemed lost out there for the most part. Maybe it's rust (he hasn't played much lately) but I think it's clearly apparent that he is now #2 in Hamilton…. Why let the kids rot in the minors? At some point in time they have to either learn to deal with the pressure of the NHL or pack it in. At 21, 22, 23 years of age it's time to dance. Bring up the kids that are performing in the minors and give them the ice time to either sink or swim. Every year the Habs should be bringing up a few (at least 1 or 2) kids and putting them in the lineup. New blood keeps the ticker pumping! Besides, there comes a point in time where there's nothing left to achieve in the minors. Danis may be a case in point. He had an impressive start to his pro career but this season he has seemed to stagnate. He should have been up with the Habs at the start of the year, if not late last year. He has nothing left to prove in the AHL. Don't let the same fate happen to Halak (although a playoff run in the AHL would probably do him good). I think it's clearly evident that Montreal has pretty much given up on Danis as far as the big team goes. My understanding is that he's free to walk after this year anyway (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this point). He's obviously behind Halak and Price on the depth charts and I suspect Desjardins is pushing him as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see two of Huet, Halak and Price in Montreal next year with the odd man out playing in Hamilton backed up by Desjardins. I'd be really surprised if Price doesn't start in Hamilton, simply because it will be better for him to be No. 1 in the AHL rather than riding the pine in the NHL. On the other hand, I wouldn't be upset if Price managed to play his way into the No. 1 spot with the Habs next fall!!! I seem to remember another 19 year old goalie being sent to the AHL by the Habs when his junior season ended. This would have been back in 1985. He led his AHL team to a Calder Cup title, followed up the next season by leading the Habs to the Stanley Cup. Anyone else remember that Roy kid? I had a look at the Sherbrooke roster for that year. There were some interesting names, including the veteran Claude Larose, Brian Skrudland, Ric Nattress, Mike Lalor, Michel Therrien (yes, that Michel Therrien!), Gaston Gingras, Stephane Richer and John Kordic.

With a glut of goalies, somebody has to be on the way out. Danis, while not a spectacular goalie, is back-up material who can play well in a stretch of games if a #1 goes down. There will be some teams who will show some interest in him.

I wonder if Dryden would let him wear #29? Since Dryden is a guy who was on record that he'd rather have the Jersey's "honoured" and not "retired"

Part of Price's learning curve. If his junior career is an indication - and I've seen him play plenty of times - he's bound to be inconsistent at first. From what I understand, he made some rookie mistakes. One more reason for him to spend some time in Hamilton next year under Melanson's watchful eye. I'd hold off anointing him as next year's starting goalie in Montreal just yet.

i don't really think giving up 3 goals on 32 shots is a bad outing, having seen price, huet and halak play a ton this season on tv and in person, i'd say that price is probably the best out of the three right now. his ability to handle the puck and move it up ice is by far better than h and h, and its something that this team really needs with our d having so much trouble making a good breakout pass.
our team is young and i dont see any reason why we can't have a young goalie as well between the pipes. he'll probably start in hamilton, only to showcase huet, deal him for a quality center or d-man and let halak and price handle the job with the big club. may as well let the kids grow together.
either way its going to be a very interesting training camp.
one thing is for sure, if price is the best goalie in camp, and pre-season, he will be the starter in october, i don't see gainey and carbo putting their best goalie in the ahl just because.
