According to a news report.

Regardless of his ownership style and some dubious business dealings flagged by the Securities and Exchange Commission, this is sad news and my prayers go out to his family.
Unless his daughters want the headache of trying to run a small market NHL franchise with no immediate oxygen in terms of a viable arena, then I would imagine the next few months will be dedicated to poring over the books (apparently Ottawa borrowed a lot of money from the league and perhaps other sources) and when the numbers are clear then moving on to proceed to find a buyer who will commit to keep the franchise in Ottawa.

Is their more of a chance they can now get an arena downtown with Eugene no longer in the picture? Is there some local owner with big pockets in Ottawa?

Bit of a typo in the article. Terry Mathews didn't know he was so rich. Perhaps someone from outside of Ottawa wil express interest. If they can keep a team in Arizona with a minor league stadium, they can certainly keep it in Ottawa.

Ottawa fans tend to forget that before he bought the team, no one showed any interest in keeping the team in Ottawa. The NHL was getting ready to look at other cities before he stepped up. He may have been a little cheap but he gave Ottawa some good teams.

Melnyk does not have the financial ability to do it, I do not believe his family does either. There is no appetite from a local, provincial or federal level to fund this type of infrastructure. It will take someone with deep pockets to build a new arena. It would be easier for the NHL to force a sale and move the team. I think I read somewhere the NHL is looking at Houston as a possible location.

Florida or Arizona should be candidates to move before Ottawa. Why Florida? Not enough fans at the games.

South Florida is a strange sports market. The Marlins, even on the rare occasions when they produced a winner, never drew well.
A winning team like the Panthers is not going to produce chatter about moving. But the reality is the gate revenue and the value of the local tv deal are soft, which I am sure is a source of irritation for ownership.

I bet those teams don't exist without the revenue sharing program, funded in large part by the Canadian teams. One wonders if the Bettman expansion has made enough of a boost to the US tv revenue. Is there much viewership for Florida, Tampa, Carolina?
