Mathieu Carle is ready for a new challenge
Le Droit
Mathieu Carle's season is far from over. The defenseman was still in Rouyn-Noranda awaiting confirmation by the Bulldogs and he got it Monday morning.
The team has given him two days to get to Steel Town. He spent Monday night at his parent's house in Buckingham before making his way to Hamilton yesterday morning. He's determined not to miss his opportunity should he be needed.
"The Bulldogs are left with six healthy defensemen now that Jean-Philippe Cote is injured." he said prior to leaving Gatineau. "No one has made any promises, but I want to take this opportunity to discover a different level of hockey. It will be my first real experience playing with a professional team and I want to take advantage of the situation."
The Canadiens farm team is doing quite well thank you very much. They eliminated the Rochester Americans in six games and are waiting to play the winner of the Grand Rapid Griffins-Manitoba Moose series before resuming their quest for the Calder Cup.
"My agent has spoken to me about it" said Carle, the Canadiens third pick in the recent draft." If the team beats Rochester, I would be most likely be invited to join it for the rest of the playoffs and now, it's done. It will be a good test and could lead to a deal with the Canadiens"
The past season was decisive for the defenseman. He changed cities in December going from the Titan of Acadie-Bathurst to the Huskies of Rouyn-Noranda. Time has been good to him and today, he's glad he was traded.
"It wasn't easy to leave Bathurst. I left some good friends there, but that's hockey"
For the second time in as many Springs, Carle played in a QMJHL semi-final. Both times, his team lost.
"The playoffs were very demanding" he added "Nothing was easy and I was on the ice 30 minutes a game. I was used in all kinds of situations and I improved all aspects of my game"
Comments confirmed by Montreal Canadiens director of player personel Trevor Timmins.
" If we selected Mathieu Carle in the second round, it's because we believe he has the potential to play in the NHL one day" he said during a phone conversation." He went from an offensive role to a defensive one and adapted well. He's still young and has some learning to do. He is, however, on the right track."
Mathieu Carle was asked to meet Huskies GM and coach Andre Tourigny two weeks after his arrival in Rouyn-Noranda. He was made assistant captain.
"It's a reflection of his personality" said Timmins " Mathieu Carle is a leader and he proved it this year."
Mathieu Carle has no idea where he'll be next season. He has three options. The Montreal Canadiens in the NHL, the Hamilton Bulldogs in the AHL, or returning as a 20 year old player in the QMJHL.
Should it be the latter option, his sincerest wish is to return to Rouyn-Noranda.
"I really enjoyed the last few months with the team and I've said as much to Andre Tourigny. The Huskies will have an excellent team next season and I wouldn't mind being part of it."
The decision is not Mathieu Carle's however, added Timmins.
"It's early, but I see him in Hamilton. Time will tell"
