Perron

I think Perron has one of the best set of hands in this draft....but how much value do you but in superb junior stickhandling? He's a shifty skater but he's not fast. He has an accurate shot but it's not necessarily heavy. He has active periods and he has inactive periods. He has great games and invisible games, but to his credit he played well in all of the series clinching games in the playoffs.
I watched three playoff games versus Halifax and he was essentially invisible for 8 of the ten periods. In the first two periods of the series clinching game however he was the best player on the ice. He even backchecked a couple of times.
But reality is reality. He will not be a fast player at the NHL level, and he's got miles to go on being competent enough defensively to get a sniff of NHL action. Many of his moves on Q defencemen won't work on Lidstrom, Neidermayer, Pronger et al, especially at slow speed. He will also need to get quite a bit stronger.
Looking at Kulemin playing for Russia in the world championships....he was 19 when he was drafted...and was mighty impressive in the WJC's.
Will Perron even make next year's WJC team?
Last year's highly touted overager was Kulemin, who is similar to Perron in stickhandling and scoring abilities, but there's no comparison when it comes to speed or strength.
Kulemin was taken 42nd overall last year.
I'm thinking Perron could go anywhere from 25th to 45th as some team will take a chance on his offensive upside I would think in a draft bereft of offensive depth, but if I'm a head scout, there's just no way I'm taking that gamble in the first round. There are too many things I don't like about his game
Even if you don't think Tyrell will become a second liner, I don't think there's any way you can pass on a player of his ilk to pick a prospect that is a longshot to be a future top six forward with a good team over a player I think at worst will be a solid third line NHLer.
Just because I wouldn't pick Perron in the first round doesn't mean it won't happen....might a team take that chance in the first round?
Perhaps St. Louis with one of of their three first rounders....but I'm guessing that if the Blues want to use on of their three top picks on a "boom or bust" type player they may take Korostin.
Edmonton? He doesn't fit the Oiler speed requirement - if he played on a line with Hemsky they'd need two pucks.
