Interesting comment in today's G&M in an article by Grant Kerr: Kerr: Canada's next team at Games should have a fresh, young look
GRANT KERR
Move over Rob Blake. You too, Todd Bertuzzi. And, probably Martin Brodeur, Adam Foote and Joe Sakic as well. Why? A new generation of Canadian hockey heroes is knocking on the door for the next Winter Olympics in February of 2010..........................
Canada has a potential embarrassment of riches defensively, and the goaltending shouldn't be too bad either with Roberto Luongo, Ray Emery, Cam Ward and emerging star Carey Price ready to take over from Brodeur..........................Complete article here: www.globesports.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070516.wsptkerr16/GSStory/GlobeSportsHockey/home

So far, Gainey et al are looking like geniuses for selecting him with that 5th pick.
Every non-Habs fan I speak with is green with envy at the prospect of Montreal's future....not only in terms of Price's franchise-status potential if he stays, but also in terms of other franchise-type players Montreal could possibly get for him in a trade.

[/i] [/quote] I've decided to read that a bit differntly. Amazing how one comma changes the emphasis: Roberto Luongo, Ray Emery, Cam Ward , and emerging star Carey Price ready to take over from Brodeur.

Still not ready to annoint Gainey a genius for that move just yet. As I said at the time, unless he becomes a top 3 goaltender in the league, I don’t think it was a great pick. Which would you rather have? Price? Or Kopitar and Halak? Can you tell the difference between Halak and Price’s playoff stats? Gp: 13,
SO: 3
GAA: 2.29
Save %: 927Versus GP: 12
SO: 1
GAA: 2.19
Save %: 929Meanwhile, the 19 year old Kopitar had 21 goals, 61 points, and oh yeah, he’s a 6’4, 220lbs center… I have no doubt that Price is a better prospect than Halak… but is the difference between the two big enough to warrant passing up on a guy like Kopitar (or Bourdon, or Staal) ? Time will tell…

That's why I said "so far". IF he turns out to be a franchise goalie...among the Top 3 in the league, that's a pretty nice foundation around which to build your team.
And IF Price is an NHL real deal...then we have Halak as valuable trade bait. Not an undesirable position to be in.
I see your point about Kopitar....he's a horse.

I certainly hope Price lives up to the hype... we could use a little star power around the Bell Centre in the next decade or so...

I'm really curious to see if Price's puck handling can improve our defence. If he can buy them an extra second here and there, that could make all the difference between our D turning the puck over and making a smart play.

One more reason for Bob and co. to be very careful with Price. If the Hamilton fans and media were all over him because of three so-called average performances, imagine what some media people in Montreal will do when he makes the usual rookie mistakes. Roy had the advantage of being francophone, Price doesn't. They'll be on his case faster than you can say Luc Bourdon or Anze Kopitar.

They'll be on his case faster than you can say Luc Bourdon or Anze Kopitar. jeff hackett wasn't exactly stellar and wasn't french at all and the city was behind him. he worked hard and was a good guy. i think that goalies or at least the good ones thrive on pressure. it is what the position is all about, and when he steps on the ice if he can't turn off the external noise/naysayers/media/fans and focus on stopping the puck he'll never succeed. i think that montreal realizes now that the dynasties are gone, they want a winner, and realize that he is young and will make mistakes. in answer to Andrew's question about price's ability to move the puck, it will make a big difference, that is in large part the reason i think he may take huet's starting job from him in september, it's like having a 3rd d-man back there.
