This kid is elite. Fast, shifty and superb hands. Only 5’10” or he would go higher. He is very fun to watch. I really like that the new crew is going with speed and skill.

Does he come to KW or stay in the Slovak mens league?
Suddenly my WJC CAN-SLO tickets in August look great!
Man, he was fun to watch on tv/video, now I get some live views.

For anyone who has not watched Mešár, his shiftiness is sublime, he has great cross overs, stick handling is top notch, and he had silky mitts. 5’10” is the only reason he is not higher. I was a bit surprised when Sykora was the third draft eligible chosen by Slovakia to attend the WC over Mešár, but this is a good skill pick at this point. Times may be a changing in terms of draft philosophy. Tomorrow’s boat load of picks will help confirm or confuse as to the new team’s draft strategy.

From Corey Pronman.
Player comparable: Alexander Barabanov Background: Mesar has played pro hockey in Slovakia the last two seasons. He was a top forward at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in the summer. He made Slovakia’s world junior team in a scoring role and also played well in games for Slovakia’s senior team. Analysis: Mesar’s game is defined by speed and pace. He’s one of the better skaters in this draft, with the ability to burn up the neutral zone to create clean entries with speed. He has good skill and playmaking ability, and shows he can make tough plays with the puck with pace. Mesar lacks size at 5-foot-10 and isn’t an overly physical player. His compete is good enough for me but probably not where you want for an undersized player. I think with his speed, skill and scoring ability he can carve out a career as a top-nine winger though. Thoughts on the pick: Filip Mesar played opposite Slafkovsky’s power play flank on Slovakia’s U18 team. He’s a player who brings a lot of speed and skill to the table and has the potential to score goals and help an NHL power play down the line.

He has been playing in the Slovak mens league, but we will see what the Habs do in terms of this upcoming season. Two years in the OHL and then Laval is an option.

Not sure I saw this coming this quickly. Good for him.
He can play in the OHL (Kitchener have his import rights), Laval or Montreal this season if the Habs want him in North America, which I am guessing they do by signing him. If he plays in the OHL or even in the AHL, his ELC will slide as he is only 18 and will not have played the minimum number of games in the NHL.
Is he ready for AHL competition? In addition to his time with the national U18 and U20 teams, he did play the last two seasons against men in the Slovakian top league. We shall see what the development team feels in the fall after camp.

Teams have until July 15 to sign their Euro prospects, so I guess the Habs really value getting control over where he plays was paramount.

Good updates, NW. I have not been paying much attention to the count of top nine forwards signed to play in Laval next season. Maybe Mesar is considered by management to be viable there. I would have some doubts about sticking a smallish Euro kid in the AHL at his age. Hockey development is debatable, but for me one season in Kitchener, then one season with the Rocket, and hopefully 2024-25 as a regular winger in Montreal.

Let him play top line everything with the Rangers and dominate, then move to Laval and adjust to NA pro play with less time and space. And see where it goes Year three.
