So I guess Price won't be playing. At least it's settled I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so ... (the general you, not you specifically)

I write my own real estate and wind turbines land lease contracts, then take it to my lawyer to make sure i didn't screw up the wording...and they are a wonder to behold on conditions.
"If..then" is a potential legal nightmare...and Hughes took it to another level. Make that two levels.
Just WOW...
BTW...it took half an hour to debate ONE word. The word was "resume". It had to be conditioned with thirty words.

When he still experienced pain and swelling at season's end after so much time off, that said it all. And didn't he express pessimism at the end of season PC concerning the upcoming season? What everyone except the most optimistic knew is now official.

For sure, to say the conditionality involved with this pick is complicated is an understatement.
It certainly seems Montreal will benefit from having the extra first rounder in 2025. I cannot imagine the scenario where Hughes would say I really want to use Calgary's late (20-32) first rounder in 2024 when the pathways to get something much better open up for 2025.
I hope Monahan can play good hockey and attract interest at the deadline. However, I think he is basically done. For skaters, hips are a far likelier career ender than knees. And he has had surgery on both hips in less than two years. Washington is not optimistic about Backstrom's future after the hip injury and surgery. Paul Byron looked like a shell of himself in the spring and now has not even been able to skate this summer.

We should have some nice rentals this year, on paper, but if Monahan and Byron haven't played much, Drouin remains a mystery wrapped in an enigma, Dadonov is expensive... the list shortens quickly. And Allen is harder to let go if Price is done.

More coming you have to bet on it ….if Monahan can recover he’s a great trade chip and possible signing at a fraction of this last contract no real risk here plus you you add another 1st pick down the road .
If Price is done for the season have to think that’s the end .

One has to be impressed with Hughes moves so far. He's not just committed to the rebuild, but is making very astute moves to get it going. He recognizes that first and foremost one builds through the draft as almost every Cup champion has shown over the past few decades. So he has/is amassing great draft picks.
The next key is being able to pick the right prospects. We won't know whether he has that skill for a few years. But everything I'm reading looks like he has made some astute picks so far. (I know, at this point it's all hype as every pick is made to look wonderful).
A gm then needs to be able to make some good trades. Jury is still out on Hughes ability there. The Romy for Dach will be interesting. Is Romy another Sergechev and Dach another Drouin?
And lastly, the gm has to make some good FA signings. No point in doing that now, but I suspect when the time comes, Hughes, given his experience as a player's agent, will know what buttons to push to get the best FAs.
I'm optimistic. This Monahan trade is genius as there is no risk and potential for very high reward.

As I mentioned in another thread: Hughes will now have to focus on getting a goalie eventually. Our D prospects look really good. Forwards look a lot better than we have had in decades. But now we need a goalie with Price out, likely permanently.
But Hughes may be blessed that MB's worst long term deals of Price and Weber are being taken off the books.

Let's hope in 2025, both Florida and Calgary are top 10 picks

This is actually a really great excerpt from Treliving’s presser. By the way, what a summer for Brad.
