Rough night …boys were hanging for the most part….wasn’t a fun game ….these losses are tougher to watch then when the kids get to dangle. This team likely won’t be lottery material…I’m goof if they mature get better.

For sure, development is the key this season.
Based on what I see, yes I would tend to say it is unlikely the Habs are bottom three bad. But the separation of the bad teams from the mediocre teams may take longer to materialize this season (last season it seemed to happen quickly and dramatically). I still think Montreal is a lock to be bottom ten, probably in the 5-7 range.

It seems every year there is always a team that bounces up into the top 3 so finishing in the 5 to 7 range is not the end of the world. As long as you don't finish out of the bottom 10 you have a shot. Plus since we didn't jump in draft position, we still could jump up to 1st 2 more times in the next 5 years. Bold are the biggest increases. 2022 Montréal Canadiens Retained 1st Selection New Jersey Devils Moved from 5th to 2nd2021 Buffalo Sabres Retained 1st Selection Seattle Kraken Moved from 3rd to 2nd 2020 New York Rangers Moved from (8th - 15th) to 1st Los Angeles Kings Moved from 4th to 2nd Ottawa Senators Retained 3rd Selection 2019 New Jersey Devils Moved from 3rd to 1st New York Rangers Moved from 6th to 2ndChicago Blackhawks Moved from 12th to 3rd2018 Buffalo Sabres Retained 1st Selection Carolina Hurricanes Moved from 11th to 2ndMontréal Canadiens Moved from 4th to 3rd 2017 New Jersey Devils Moved from 5th to 1stPhiladelphia Flyers Moved from 13th to 2ndDallas Stars Moved from 8th to 3rd2016 Toronto Maple Leafs Retained 1st Selection Winnipeg Jets Moved from 6th to 2ndColumbus Blue Jackets Moved from 4th to 3rd 2015 Edmonton Oilers Moved from 3rd to 1st

For sure, Tank, it happens. The craziest luck, of course, was with the Rangers. In their very short rebuild (2017-20) they were never a truly bad team. I mean, New York had 77 and 78 points in the two full seasons after Gorton penned the famous rebuild letter to Rangers fans and 79 points in 70 games in the Covid shutdown year.
2023 is set to be an exceptional draft year. There could quite possibly be two or three franchise type cornerstones and really the entire top ten is full of elite talent. It could be argued that there are six or seven kids this year who would have been the first overall pick in 2022.
So basically even if Montreal cannot vault into the top three, there will be an embarrassment of riches available in the 5-7 range.

For me, it was 2017. Each team jumped a minimum of 4 spots to claim the top 3. With the rule changes, it helps the teams that really finish last.

Even with MTL's good start, we are second last in the East. Bottom five is a guarantee
