I just read an article on NHL.com. He talks about rehab & how even climbing stairs is difficult. No mention of any thing else.

It's true. Basu's article is a worthwhile read for anyone with access to theathletic. Otherwise, CTV, YahooSports... many are reporting it now.

I was always thinking it might be pain killers. But alcohol could certainly be an equally big problem in someone's life.
Regarding Price's injuries, they seem to be degenerative. It does not sound as though more surgeries and rehabs are likely to help. It is shame because I am sure it is tough to go out not on one's own terms.

I just hope he retires or stays on LTIR.
WE don't need him or want to come off LTIR and destroy the cap.

He isn't going to retire. Let's be honest, no one here would give up 31.5 million.

He isn't going to retire. Let's be honest, no one here would give up 31.5 million. Sure. But he could stay on LTIR so he gets paid. All this talk of his about coming back appears to me based on pride and selfishness. Show some class- ride quietly off into the sunset for the team. I'm done with Price.

It's Geoff Molson's money at this point. Seems like a formal retirement and a negotiated buyout makes the most sense but I'm not sure about the cap ramifications. That way Carey gets "most" of the contract value and can step away from public view. As long as he's on LTIR then he's going to keep having to answer to the public.

I think this will indeed drag on. I was terrified about this possibility at first, but I'm starting not to mind it so much.
For one, I believe Carey when he says that he still wants to win a cup. And imo, if he can be pain free he will attempt a comeback. Heck, its hard enough for the average varsity athlete to move on to the next phase of life when their time has come. Imagine what it's like for those athletes with greatness, not to mention where the lifestyle dropoff is much steeper. Remember, Carey isn't moving on to garage league hockey... he's moving on to cooking for his kids, daycare pickups, etc. No team, no colleagues at the office, no time with the boys. No wonder he had a tough time adjusting after the loss to Tampa.
Second reason why I think this will drag on is because of Carey's focus on fatherhood. Essentially, Carey wasn't happy with how he was showing up as a father. And this is just my opinion, but I think Carey has something to prove to himself in terms of being at the top of his game while also showing up as the father that he wants to be. That's been elusive so far for him in his career. Iirc, he had isolated himself from his family, basically living out of the basement, during the cup run so that he could stay in the zone. Compare that to the few games that he played last season, where he was often spotted interacting with his kids during the TV timeouts at home games (unfortunately he was 0.878 in those 5 games). I think now that he's gone through the program and his mind is right, he'll jump at the opportunity to excel again while also delivering on his goals as a father.
And as much as I don't want to see his salary anywhere close to the Habs again, I'll be extremely impressed if he can rebuild his body, his mind, his career and his family. As for whether he does it in a CH sweater, there would be pros and cons... but I'm ok either way as long as he doesn't get in the way of the rebuild.

His comments suggest that the drinking was a problem after the Cup finals, but he doesn't specifically limit it to that time. If it was an issue before then, it might explain the many bad games he had at times.
Regardless, I'm guessing his knees are shot and the likelihood of any return to the NHL is around 1% if that. Again, speculatively, I think that SC run had him on pain killers a lot and that the damage incurred during that time is now irreparable. I'm also guessing he wasn't drinking during that time because pain killers and alcohol are a bad mix and that is explanatory of his excellent play.
