Aside from the Quebecois angle and the fact they were both third overall picks, Dubois does not really give me the Drouin vibe. Dubois is a big centre with a lot of bite to his game. Drouin is a skilled winger but he only wants open ice or else he just hangs out on the perimeter. Yes, Dubois has been outspoken in Columbus and Winnipeg. However, I do not see Dubois lacking for confidence. He may have rubbed some folks in Columbus and Winnipeg the wrong way but Dubois plays with swagger. Unfortunately for Drouin, confidence has been an issue ever since he turned pro. Also, I like the trajectory of Dubois' career. He seems to be hitting his stride, a good season last year at age 23 and now a very big season. Whereas Drouin's best NHL season was age 21 and he has basically disappeared in his mid-20s. I am not saying I want Dubois at any cost. But assuming he wants to be in Montreal and cost is not prohibitive, I believe Dubois would totally change the complexion of the top six in a positive way. Bring your own whoppee cushion because my Dubois bandwagon can get rough.... Suzuki and CC are facing the toughest defenders. A second scoring line will change that AND Dubois can make those around him better. Now if the Hockey Gods gave us Bedard...along with Dubois, we would have the greatest Center depth EVER. Which is why Dubois, right now, makes no sense. The point of this season (supposedly) is “suck hard for Bedard”. Well if we get Bedard then who plays third line? The generational talent you just sold your soul for? The player you locked up for 8 years at almost 8 million per season? Or the great hope you just brought over to the team? For how much ? 8 million +??

Adding Dubois for the 24/25 season makes sense to me Don’t trade for him and burn up assets. Sign him as a UFA. We will be better next year but will probably miss the playoffs again (barely). He doesn’t need that. Now, the following year a lot if things fall into place. Over the next two years, the roster will add Joshua Roy, Sean Farrell, Owen Beck, Filip Mesar, Jared Davidson (another sleeper choice of mine) and possibly Riley Kidney and Oliver Kapanen. Add improvement from Slafkovsky, Suzuki & Caufield along with a top pick from this year and the offense will be fine. The back end will be anchored by Guhle with support from Wifi, Hutson, Harris, Engstrom and possibly even Mailloux. We may get a dmman with our second first rounder this year. They won’t all make it but its a good foundation. You will never see Mesar, Farrell and Caufield on the same team. Hughes even said he doesn’t forsee the team having all three and getting smaller

But... but... what about Dvo and Evans... lol... I agree that with Dubois only being 24 it means he is starting to get into his prime years, and the fact he is on pace for 40 goals this year could be an indicator of things to come and having a 1a (suze) and a 1b (woody) would be a great thing to have...he's an RFA at the end of this year... could we entice the Jets with the panthers 1st, our 3rd and the pens 4th this year and the Flames 1st in 2025? Pretty close to an 8.5M to 10.5M offer sheet... of course this all depends on how the lottery balls drop... we would have to see where he is at after the end of the season before you make an offer and he would have to be signed long term as well... If we don’t get the #1 ball, then we go hard after someone like Dubois (a legit second line center). If we get the #1 ball, I don’t see us adding a center.

For sure, Dubois arrival is not imminent. The draft lottery will take place before the summer's big hockey trades could materialize. And there is not necessarily a compelling reason to believe that Hughes would pay Winnipeg's asking price when Dubois would be free to pick the Habs in the summer of 2024 if that is what he wants.
Of course, acquiring Dubois before he hits UFA status confers the advantage of being able to offer the player an 8 year deal, which would keep the AAV slightly lower (for example 7 x 9 versus 8 x 8.25).
It would take a lot of luck to get Bedard. And the other top centres in the draft would be nice too. But guys like Fantilli and Carlsson are not going to immediately erase the need for a serious top six centre to complement Suzuki. Look at Anaheim, McTavish was a stud in the 2021 draft and he looks good now in his rookie season but he would not be the answer right now as the 2C for a team trying to be competitive this season.

Even if we win the lottery, adding Dubois gives us depth down the center that we have never seen before.
It will take 4 years to open the vaults for Bedard. By that time we have a 100 million cap.
An Ancient Spartan saying (that i just made up)....one can never be too rich, too sexy...OR have too much center talent.

Don't see, nor want Dubs, Suze and Bedard on same team. Too may centres to share too little ice time. If we get Bedard I would go after a stud dman before Dubs.
With respect to the duds on the current team, I'm thinking we send Drouin, Dads and Hoffman down to Laval. Firstly, I hate watching those entitled snobs on the ice. Secondly, I would much rather watch some hungry AHLers in Habs uniforms and give them a chance in the show. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, we will get more at the trade deadline by having cleared their cap space the next 2 months than we will get for them in any trades. Now I know we're suppose to let them play so they can improve their value by trade deadline. Ya sure. How's that working out? I believe we get better trade value by having more cap space which we can acquire by sending them down. Everything I'm reading is most teams are going to be strapped for cap space come trade deadline. HuGo should put us in a position that we have cap space to take dud players from playoff teams who need to clear cap space to bring in better players from other teams. We take their duds with some of their draft picks. And I don't have to watch Drouin or Dads in a Habs uniform again. As for Hoff, let him know that he had better change his attitude for next season or Laval is where he'll be.

Put all three of them on the first PP for all I care and split their EV time evenly. Ice time doesn't have to be an issue. Heck, Patrice Bergeron is 4th among centers on Boston alone in avg EV time per game, but he clearly is not the 4th line center. He gets tons of time on the PP. Or move someone to the wing situationally. PLD isn't even listed as a center on many websites, including NHL.com. Malkin has bounced around from center to wing his entire career. St-Louis Blues juggle ROR, Schenn, Kyrou and Thomas. Dallas found a solution for Pavelski, Hinz and Seguin. Edmonton manages Draisatl, RNH, McDavid. Florida... Barkov, Bennett, Reinhart, Verhaeghe I'm losing faith if we can't find a way to put Suzuki, Bedard and PLD in the same lineup. A comfortable roster will not lead us to a cup.

Yep, if Dubois takes that Im all over it The issue is not next year, although it could be if Bedard hits all his bonuses (and it’s likely he will) The real issue is in year 3 or 4. We’d have Suzuki still making $7.75 million Bedard looking to get 8 million for 8 years. Dubois at 8 million Then Dach at 6 million Gallagher at 6.5 million Guhle at 5 million That’s only 6 players and 41 million spend. With the cap at around 88-90 million How the other teams make it work is with a constant turnover of low cost nobodies on the bottom six, not 8 million dollar players But I’m certainly on board if anyone can make the math in 3 years work

But what kills me is that the total cost for Suzuki, PLD and Bedard isn't even that bad imo. 8 + 8 + 7.75 = 23.75 The Leafs are paying 22.6 for just two centers, Auston Matthews and Tavares. If we can get 3 star centers at virtually the same total cost, I'd be pretty happy.

You got Dubois, Suzuki and Bedard as your centers, you can sign any winger in the league at a favorable contract.
By the time Bedard needs big money, you got a 100 million cap.
Who would you really want to have for 24 million? Matthews/Taveras or the Centers of the Universe? Three centers capable of 100 points or MORE? Power play from hell? Scoring threat at any time?
Fully developed...Dach, slaf, cc, suzuki, Dubois, Bedard is the top 6 on ANY contender. Maybe Habs '75 worthy. The bottom 6 can be million dollar Evans like fillers.
C'mon, there is nothing but drooling for this to happen. I can't think of any time in our illustrious history were we would have this much talent at center, or the league.
Lastly, if we are not all over this as a gift from the Hockey Gods, we don't deserve to win another cup for 50 years.

There's nothing wrong with having too much of a good thing.

Signing Dubois is a conundrum and the situation should be clearer after the draft. It might well be that we end up with a Zach Benson or Andrew Cristall, both extremely smart, crafty, creative players, but who may not play centre. Even Bedard is a guy who I have only seen play RW, though he's like Patrick Kane in that his position is irrelevant. Or maybe we'll wait until Dubois is a UFA and realize that a centre core of Suze, Dach and Beck is really good. In basketball, you can have only so many guys who need the ball in their hands to be useful. Too many 1 and 2 C's in hockey is also not healthy for team composition, role acceptance and ice time.

THEN no other forward makes over 4 million. So after you pay Suzuki, Bedard, Dubois and Caufield (which will be around $36 million), what do you do with Dach, Slafkovsky, the other first round selection we got, Gallagher, …. Remember no one 3 years from now can make over 4.5-5.0 million Then on defense they gave Reilly making 7 million. In 3 years time that will likely be our Guhle. But the Leafs, to make the math work, don’t have another defenseman making over 2 million. We got a ton of young defense that will be looking 4-5 million in the face in 3 years. Now, no one knows what will happen with Carey Price , if he plays the math is never there. Do what you want, you can’t have four 8 million forwards, a 6 million defenseman and a 10 million dollar goalie and get under the cap with the players we have under contract and those the will require raises. We will have 40 million to pay 17 players Even without Price the math is hard. We are currently 11 million over the cap with 14 million on LTIR. And in 3 years time, there is no way the cap rises to 100 million. The cap is 82 million now. The current cap is projected to be about 92 million in 3 years time. It’s an extra 10 million, which is great, but that just gets us under the cap NOW. As you said, lots of hard decisions to be made. But filling out the bottoms part of the roster with no names doesn’t seem smart to me

But filling out the bottoms part of the roster with no names doesn’t seem smart to me We definitely agree that there will be hard decisions to make. My point is that we cannot shy away from putting ourselves in those difficult positions. It's the upside that we have to chase, not the comfort of easy decisions. MB stayed in the safe zone. The cup winners all have difficult decisions to make eventually. Colorado was overloaded and couldn't keep Kadri. Yes, he walked for nothing, which isn't ideal, but they got their cup. And yes, signing PLD would force some of those difficult decisions. There would be inconveniences, no doubt. But the advantage is that we sign a star player without giving up any assets. And if we're truly in a cap jam, Dach would be expendable, or someone else perhaps. So rather than just staying put, we could replace Dach with PLD, a sideways move at worst, and walk away with some fresh assets that we acquired for Dach.
