hockeysfuture.com/articles/9742A few years of solid drafting has left the Montreal Canadiens in the enviable position of having few organizational holes to fill, allowing them to pick the best player regardless of position. But even if the organizational depth wasn’t so solid, the club’s Director of Player Recruitment and Development said he wouldn’t approach the upcoming draft any other way. “You can’t go into a draft focusing on one position,” Trevor Timmins said. “You want to keep all your options open and we’re trying to build depth at all levels.” And with Timmins laughing off any idea of giving a hint as to who the club is looking at, predicting the Canadiens’ 2007 draft is truly a shot in the dark....

i hear ya, but pickest the best player available is always the best idea, the asset can be traded later, and who knows in 3-4 years when these picks are ready to stepin maybe we'll be deep there. not likely but with ufa's you never know what could be then.

Another year of BPA IMHO. I don't really remember the last time a draft had a whole crop of big and talented centres (2003 maybe?, with Eric Staal, Nathan Horton, Jeff Carter, Zach Parise, Ryan Getzlaf, Ryan Kesler, Mike Richards in the first round).

It changes from year to year. Next year (IIRC) is supposedly full of big talented d-men. Other years are European heavy, others forwards. What makes this year's crop so intriguing is the complete crap shoot it appears to be. There still isn't a consensus when you compare all the different draft services. I love the draft every year, but I'm really stoked this year. I feel that there's going to be a lot of action. I can't wait!

One week from now we should have two new prospects in the fold, with a half dozen others waiting to find out the next day.
This is a weird draft where anything from #20 to #50 could all work out to be pretty decent NHL'ers, but there are no studs at the top like the last number of years. They also could be pretty interchangable depending on which team you talk to. That makes scouting and drafting so important, and our guys have a decent track record and should be able to take advantage of drafts like this.
Beyond the first six or so, it will be interesting next Friday night!!
