Minnesota just signed Matthew Boldy to a 7 year, 7MM AAV contract. Boldy has put up a decent season, with .69 ppg and .29 goals per game. Caufield is scoring at a .82 ppg pace and .59 goals per game. One could also argue that he's doing that on a weak team with a poor power play. What kind of extension do you see for him? I don't think Hughes is going to wait too long, or go with a bridge. Caufield has nothing to prove.
Suzuki is at 7.875, but even though he's the captain and a centre, I don't think Hughes can use that as leverage. I suspect Caufield is going to be a 8 something....$8.25 maybe? For 8 years.

For sure, the only leverage is to impose a bridge deal on a great young sniper (fan favorite too) just because he is not arb eligible. Of course, I believe management is smart enough to see that as a suboptimal (lose-lose) outcome down the road.
So the question really becomes what would a longer-term deal (four years, six, seven or eight years) look like. Boldy's sample size is somewhat smaller than Caufield's. The Wild power forward has a point per game average slightly above the Habs sniper. But Caufield's goal scoring productivity is well above Boldy's. Goles son amores. Clearly, Caufield is getting a bigger deal than Boldy. The question is how much bigger.

Caufield is 7.875 max
Suzuki’s numbers drop without Caufield, and Caufield’s fall off a cliff without Suzuki. They are a package deal.
There are negatives to Caufield’s game that will bring the number down below 8 million 1. He gets no assists. If he is not scoring he is not producing. 26 goals and 10 assists, look good when you say 36 points in 44 games. But Caufield is suppose to be a 70-80 point player or better. 50 goals , 20 assists is not sustainable. He might do that this year, but over a career??
2. His goals aren’t improving the power play. Now that could come down to systems, but he has more space. He has to do more on the PP than wait for his sidekick to pass him the puck

I'd love it to be the same as Suzuki but I am guessing 8 x 8

I hope he takes Suze numbers but I think it'll be a bit more... 8x8 sounds about where it will be...
You can talk about Cole not doing anything but scoring goals but he does something only he can do on this team and it happened on Dachs goal vs the rags... cole brought the puck across the blue line and dishes to Suze, Cole heads toward the left side while Suze passes to Dach, the Rags goalie has to keep an eye on Cole and that allows Dach to get a really good shot off that goes in. Cole got the secondary apple but that goal does go in if any other Habs is where Cole was... Cole makes goalies think about him when he doesn't have the puck
